Psalm 106

34 They did not destroy the peoples,
Concerning whom the LORD had commanded them,

35 But they mingled with the Gentiles
And learned their works;

36 They served their idols,
Which became a snare to them.

37 They even sacrificed their sons
And their daughters to demons,

38 And shed innocent blood,
The blood of their sons and daughters,
Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;
And the land was polluted with blood.

39 Thus they were defiled by their own works,
And played the harlot by their own deeds.

Psalm 106:34-39

1. The command of the LORD

10 “So it shall be, when the LORD your God brings you into the land of which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities which you did not build,

11 houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant—when you have eaten and are full—

12 then beware, lest you forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
13 You shall fear the LORD your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name.

14 You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are all around you

15 (for the LORD your God is a jealous God among you), lest the anger of the LORD your God be aroused against you and destroy you from the face of the earth.

CLEAR EXAMPLES OF EVIL IDOLATROUS PRACTICES

1. Northern Kingdom of Israel
In the reign of Kiong Ahab

32 Then he set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.

33 And Ahab made a [i]wooden image. Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

34 In his days Hiel of Bethel built Jericho. He laid its foundation with Abiram his firstborn, and with his youngest son Segub he set up its gates, according to the word of the LORD, which He had spoken through Joshua the son of Nun.

1 Kings 16:32-34

a) Baal worship
b) Ahab sacrificed:
i) His firstborn son
ii) His eldest son
c) This was done to lay the foundation of Jericho

2. The Southern Kingdom of Judah
In the reign of King Manasseh

1Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Hephzibah.

2 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.

3 For he rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; he raised up altars for Baal, and made a wooden image, as Ahab king of Israel had done; and he worshiped all the host of heaven and served them.

4 He also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “In Jerusalem I will put My name.”

5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD.

6 Also he made his son pass through the fire, practiced soothsaying, used witchcraft, and consulted spiritists and mediums. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger.

7 He even set a carved image of Asherah that he had made, in the house of which the LORD had said to David and to Solomon his son, “In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever;
