Text: Psalm 93

1The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty;
The LORD is clothed,
He has girded Himself with strength.
Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved.

2 Your throne is established from of old;
You are from everlasting.

3 The floods have lifted up, O LORD,
The floods have lifted up their voice;
The floods lift up their waves.

4 The LORD on high is mightier
Than the noise of many waters,
Than the mighty waves of the sea.

5 Your testimonies are very sure;
Holiness adorns Your house,
O LORD, forever.

Psalm 93:1-5

THE FOCUS OF THIS PSALM

1. The Majesty of the LORD

2. The word “Majesty” points to God’s Sovereignty

3. This in turn points to the LORD’s Reign on His throne

DIFFERENT FEATURES OF GOD’S MAJESTY HIGHLIGHTED

1. The reign of the LORD

“The LORD reigns”

Psalm 93:1a

a) This is a vital focus
b) Israel had been ruled by kings
c) God’s role as King, unfortunately, had been set aside (1 Samuel 8:7)

2. The “clothes” the LORD wears

a) “Majesty”
“He is clothed with majesty;
The LORD is clothed”
Psalm 93:1b
b) “Strength”
“He has girded Himself with strength”
Psalm 93:1c

3. What God has “established”

a) The earth
“Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved”
Psalm 93:2a
b) His throne
“Your throne is established from of old”
Psalm 93:2b

4. The Person of God

a) His eternal Being
“You are from everlasting”
Psalm 93:2b
b) In contrast to mortal kings

5. The power of enemies

3 The floods have lifted up, O LORD,
The floods have lifted up their voice;
The floods lift up their waves.

4 The LORD on high is mightier
Than the noise of many waters,
Than the mighty waves of the sea.

Psalm 93:3-4

a) The word “flood” was used to describe enemies
b) The phrase “mighty waves of the sea” was also used to describe the power of enemies

6. Recall Psalm 29

1Give unto the LORD, O you mighty ones,
Give unto the LORD glory and strength.

2 Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name;
Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
The God of glory thunders;
The LORD is over many waters.

4 The voice of the LORD is powerful;
The voice of the LORD is full of majesty.

5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars,
Yes, the LORD splinters the cedars of Lebanon.

10 The LORD sat enthroned at the Flood,
And the LORD sits as King forever.

11 The LORD will give strength to His people;
The LORD will bless His people with peace.

Psalm 29:1-5, 10-11

7. Concluding on a strong note

Your testimonies are very sure;
Holiness adorns Your house,
O LORD, forever.

Psalm 93:5

a) The testimonies
A reference to the Scriptures
b) They are “very sure”
c) The “holiness” of God
It adorns the house of the LORD forever!
