DIVISION OF THE LAND OF ISRAEL

1. God had made provision for leaders to oversee the division of the land Numbers 34:16-29; Joshua 19:51

2. The land had been divided in the days of Joshua

a) After the conquest of the land Joshua 11-12

b) The land of Canaan was properly divided Joshua 13-19

c) Land was given to the Levites Joshua 20

THE TRIBE OF DAN

1. There was no king in the land Judges 18:1

a) No one to help them address their problems

b) They had not managed to obtain their inheritance

2. Five Danites were sent out

a) These were men of valour Judges 18:2a

b) They were sent out as spies Judges 18:2b

c) This was reminiscent of the days before Israel conquered Canaan Cf. Joshua 2

d) They searched the land and came to the house of Micah Judges 18:2c

MEETING UP WITH THE LEVITE

1. The Danites recognised the Levite Judges 18:3

2. They interrogated the Levite Judges 18

a) Who brought you here?

b) What are you doing in this place?

c) What do you have here?

3. The Levite’s Response Judges 18:4

a) He was hired by Micah

b) He had become his priest

4. Request of the Five Danites

a) Inquiry to be made of God Judges 18:5a

b) Would their journey be prospered? Judges 18:5b

5. The blessing of the Levite
“The presence of the LORD be with you on your way” Judges 18:6

THE RECCE OF THE DANITES

1. The land of Laish Judges 18:7

a) The people dwelt in safety

b) There were no rulers in the land to defend the land

c) They had no allies

2. They then returned to their leaders Judges 18:8

a) They were asked for a report

b) They reported what they had seen at Laish Judges 18:9-10

i) It is a good land

ii) It is a large land

iii) It is a land where there is no lack of anything
