FAILURE OF MANY TRIBES TO CONQUER RESISTANT CITIES

Benjamin Judges 1:21
Geographical location: Just north of Judah

The children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem;
So the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin to this day. Judges 1:21

Sons of Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh)
Geographical location: North of Benjamin

1. Conquest of Bethel (Luz) Judges 1:22-26
They had help from a traitor of Bethel

2. This same traitor went to the land of the Hittite to build a city and called it Luz

3. Manasseh did not drive out

a) The inhabitants of Beth Shean Judges 1:27a

b) The inhabitants of Taanach Judges 1:27b

c) The inhabitants of Dor Judges 1:27c

d) The inhabitants of Ibleam Judges 1:27d

e) The inhabitants of Megiddo Judges 1:27e

Reason: Strong resistance
The Canaanite were determined to dwell in the land Judges 1:27f

Another reason: Change of plan by Israel
And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites under tribute, but did not completely drive them out Judges 1:28

4. Ephraim
Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites delt in Gezer among them. Judges 1:29

5. Zebulun
Geographical location: North-west of Manasseh
Nor did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and were put under tribute Judges 1:30

6. Asher
Geographical location: North West of Zebulun

Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or of the inhabitants of Sido, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob. So the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out. Judges 1:31-32

7. Naphthali
Geographic al location: East of Asher

Nor did Naphthali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them. Judges 1:33

8. Dan
Geographical locations:

a) Half tribe of Dan was in the south… near Judah

b) Half tribe of Dan was in the north… (all by itself)

c) The text below describes Dan in the north

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountains, for they would not allow them to come to the valley.
And the Amorite were determined to dwell in Mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; yet when the strength of the house became greater, they were put under tribute.
Now the boundary of the Amorites was from the Ascent of Akrabim, from Sela and upward. Judges 1:34-3

BITTER AND SAD LESSONS

1. No seeking of guidance from God

2. Poor leadership

3. Foolish short-term goals (taking tribute from the Canaanites)

4. Poor co-ordination among the tribes
