COALITION OF FIVE KINGS (AMORITES)

GOAL: TO PUNISH THE GIBEONITES FOR MAKING A TREATY WITH ISRAEL

1. Gibeon was a mighty city Joshua 10:1-2

2. Gibeon would not be easily overcome unless the five kings came together to attack it Joshua 10:3-5

APPEAL OF THE GIBEONITES

1. Their right of appeal (covenant treaty)

2. Alerting Israel of the threat posed by the 5 Kings of the Amorites Joshua 10:6

RESPONSE OF JOSHUA

1. Gathering of the army of Israel to defend the Gibeonites Joshua 10:7

2. The Lord’s word to Joshua
“Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; not a man of them shall stand before you.” Joshua 10:8

3. How the war was won

a) Good Military strategy (surprise attack)
“Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly, having marched all night from Gilgal” Joshua 10:9

b) Divine assistance
“The LORD cast down large hailstones from heaven” Joshua 10:11

A SPECIAL MIGHTY MIRACLE

1. Commanding the sun to stand still
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon;
And Moon, in the valley of Aijalon” Joshua 10:12

2. God answered this prayer-command of Joshua
“So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped,
Till the people had revenge upon their enemies” Joshua 10:13

EXECUTION OF THE FIVE KINGS OF THE AMORITES

1. They had hidden themselves in a cave at Makkedah Joshua 10:16-17

2. Trapping of the Kings in a cave Joshua 10:18

3. Pursuit of the enemies Joshua 10:19-21

4. Execution of the 5 Kings Joshua 10:22-27

a) Feet on the neck of the kings

b) Put to death

5. Encouragement to persevere
“Do not be afraid nor be dismayed; Be strong and of good courage,
for thus the LORD will do to all your enemies against whom you fight” Joshua 10:25
