(I) A SPECIAL WORD FROM GOD TO SAUL

1. Important historical context

a) Israel’s first king

b) Saul was chosen and anointed as the first monarch of Israel

2. God’s assessment of Saul as the King of Israel

a) Two assessments were made

b) Both were disastrous

c) Summary of the assessments ( 1 Samuel 13, 15 )

i) You have done foolishly ( 1 Samuel 13:13a )

ii) You have not kept the commandment of the Lord ( 1 Samuel 13:13b, 14 )

iii) You have rejected the word of the Lord ( 1 Samuel 15:23 )

(II) A SPECIAL WORD FROM GOD CONCERNING DAVID

“The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people…” 1 Samuel 13:14

1. He was the youngest of the eight sons of Jesse (1 Samuel 16:10-11)

3. He was a shepherd boy (1 Samuel 16:11)

a) Jesse’s preference

b) Samuel’s thought

5. Description of David

“He was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good looking” 1 Samuel 16:12

a) He was but a young lad

b) Yet he was chosen

(IV) OUR CHALLENGE: TO COMPREHEND THINGS SPIRITUALLY

“For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
