Title: “Poured out abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour”

INTRODUCTION

1. The Ministry of the Holy Spirit

a) Not always well-understood
b) Sometimes this doctrine is abused

2. The Person of the Holy Spirit

a) A greater understanding is needed
b) He is to be greatly treasured

THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. The Ministry of the Spirit of God was well-taught by the Lord Jesus Christ

a) He would cause rivers of living water to flow from us (John 7:38-39)
b) He would be a Helper (a paraclete) comparable to the Lord Jesus (John 14:16)
c) He dwelt among the Disciples (John 14:17c)
d) He would indwell believers (John 14:17d)
e) He would teach (John 14:26)
f) He would testify of the Lord Jesus (John 15:26)
g) He would convict people of sin (John 16:8)
h) He would guide into all truth (John 16:13)
i) He would glorify the Lord Jesus (John 16:14)

2. The Identity of the Spirit of God was clearly taught too

i) He is the Spirit of truth (John 14:17a; 16:13)
ii) He is the Helper (John 14:26)
iii) He is the Holy Spirit (John 14:26)

THE GIVING OF THE SPIRIT

“Poured out abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour” Titus 3:6

1. Poured out

a) Picture of “poured out”
b) To bestow liberally
c) To give lavishly

2. Abundantly

a) Richly
b) Greatly

3. Through Jesus Christ our Saviour

a) Through the salvation He has wrought
b) Through the Person of the Lord as our Saviour

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE OUTPOURING OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

1. The Power of God for life and ministry

a) The promise of power (Acts 1:8)
b) This was fulfilled
i) They were all filled
with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4a)
ii) And began to speak
with other tongues (languages) (Acts 2:4b)
iii) As the Spirit
gave them utterance (Acts 2:4c)

2. The Outpouring of the Spirit

b) This was prophesied (Joel 2:27-28)
b) This was fulfilled (Acts 2:17-18)
c) The same word (Poured out) was used
i) I will pour out of My Spirit
on all flesh- Acts 2:17
ii) I will pour out My Spirit
in those days –Acts 2:18
iii) There was a liberal giving
of the Spirit’s power

3. The Spirit-filled Ministry of the Apostle Paul (in Thessalonica)

a) Our gospel did not come to you
in word only 1 Thessalonians 1:5a
b) But also in power – 1 Thessalonians 1:5b
c) And in the Holy Spirit – 1 Thessalonians 1:5c
d) And in much assurance – 1 Thessalonians 1:5d

4. A similar word of Testimony of ministry (in Corinth)

a) And my speech and my preaching
were not with persuasive words of human wisdom – 1 Corinthians 2:4a
b) But in demonstration of the Spirit and of power – 1 Corinthians 2:4b

RECEIVING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. Not the spirit of the world – 1 Corinthians 2:12a

2. But the Spirit who is from God – 1 Corinthians 2:12b

3. That we might know the things
That have been freely given to us
by God – 1 Corinthians 2:12c

a) Knowledge of God
b) Things God has freely given to us
c) As heirs of God

3. God had already provided and planned

Our part is to relate to the Holy Spirit of God appropriately!

CONCLUSION

1. Seek to be filled with the Spirit of God – Ephesians 5:18
2. Seek the fruit of the Spirit – Galatians 5:22-23

a) Love
b) Joy
c) Peace
d) Longsuffering
e) Kindness
f) Goodness
g) Faithfulness
h) Gentleness
i) Self-control
