And He taught… being glorified by all

(I) THE RESPONSE OF THE MULTITUDE AT THE TEACHING OF JESUS

“And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.” Luke 4:15

“So all bore witness to Him and marvelled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, ‘Is this not Joseph’s son?’ ” Luke 4:22

1. The teaching ministry of Jesus is given due appreciation

2. The manner of teaching is clearly noted

a) Jesus did not teach as the scribes ( Matthew 7:29 )

b) He taught with authority ( Matthew 7:29 )

3. The words of Jesus were deeply appreciated

a) His words were indeed “gracious”

b) They were words that no mere son of a humble carpenter could expect to speak

4. Appreciating the power of the Spirit of God

a) He was filled with the Spirit’s power

“Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit returned from the Jordan…” Luke 4:1

b) This power was at work in His teaching ministry

“Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee …” Luke 4:14

(II) FRESH APPRECIATION OF THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS

1. He brings great honour to the ministry of teaching

2. He brings great depth to the work of teaching

3. The work of teaching is not inferior to the work of miracles

4. The work of teaching has deep impact

5. The work of teaching is no less than life-transforming

6. The profundity of Christian doctrines is traced to the teachings of Jesus

(III) THE SAD LACK OF APPRECIATION OF THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS

1. The superficial is preferred

2. The peripheral is accepted

3. So much is left undiscovered and untaught

(IV) A CHALLENGE TO APPRECIATE AFRESH JESUS AS TEACHER

1. A special relationship must be struck

2. Special efforts must be made to learn deep and profound lessons

3. Success in emulating Jesus

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marvelled. And they realised that they had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13
