(I) WHAT IS A BLESSING?

1. The significance of God’s blessings may be listed as:-

a) A sign of God’s approval

b) A sign of God’s favor

2. Evidence of God’s blessings

a) It will be most evident

b) It will be very obvious

(II) THE PROMISE OF GOD’S BLESSINGS TO THE RIGHTEOUS

1. God’s blessing is like an anointing of the individual

“Blessings are on the head of the righteous,But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.” Proverbs 10:6

2. God’s blessing extends to the name (memory) of the righteous living and dead

“The memory of the righteous is blessed,But the name of the wicked will rot.” Proverbs 10:7

3. God’s blessing extends to material wealth

“The blessing of the LORD makes one rich,And He adds no sorrow to it” Proverbs 10:22

4. God’s blessing extends to granting of desires (prayer)

“…And the desire of the righteous will be granted.” Proverbs 10:24

(III) THE DESIRE FOR BLESSING

A short study of Jacob’s search for blessings (Genesis 27-28)

1. The search for man’s blessing (Genesis 27)

2. The futility of this search for blessing

a) It was sought for through deceit

b) The words of blessing were pronounced

c) Sorrow and anguish followed

“So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, ‘The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” Genesis 27:41

3. True blessing comes from God alone

a) Knowledge of God

“…I am the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac…” Genesis 28:13

b) Promise of blessing of God’s Presence

“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” Genesis 28:15

4. Appropriate Response to the Promise of God’s blessing

“Then Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, So that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God.And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.” Genesis 28:20-22

c) To give a tithe of all that God will bless with
