Message Notes

(I) Statements of the established love of the Father for the Son

1. The Father’s existing love for the Son

a) Something that has been established between Father and Son

b) A love that the Father shows consistently to the Son

2. Statements of this established love

a) The Father’s love in relation to the giving of the authority of all things to His Son

“The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.” John 3:35

b) The Father’s love in relation to revealing all things to His Son

“For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.” John 5:20

(II) A special statement concerning the Father’s love

“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.” John 10:17

1. The extra reason for the Father to love the Son

a) The use of the inferential particle “Therefore”

b) An inference to the extra reason for the Father to love the Son

c) It was because of Jesus laying down His life that was the reason for this extra love

2. A surge of love from the Father to His Son

a) There is a greater intensity of love from the Father

b) It is above that which was established as love

(III) The significance of the act of Jesus in giving His life

1. A great sacrificial act

a) Giving His life as a fulfilment of His role as the Good Shepherd

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” John 10:11

b) Giving His life with much willingness

“No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again…” John 10:18

c) Giving His life with understanding of His Father

“As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.” John 10:15

d) Giving His life in obedience to the Lord’s command

“…This command I have received from My Father.” John 10:18
