STUDIES IN THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
Text: Matthew 10

Subject: SENDING OUT THE APOSTLES

40 “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.

41 He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.

42 And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”

Matthew 10:40-42

A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT

1. When the Disciples are received well

a) They are receiving the Lord Jesus
b) And if they are receiving the Lord Jesus, they are receiving God who sent Him

2. Different ways of being received

a) Receiving a person as a prophet
i) He will receive the reward of a prophet
ii) The example of how Elijah was received by the widow of Zarephath
1 Kings 17:8-24
b) Receiving a righteous man
i) Believing in the righteousness of the visitor
ii) The example of Barzillai 2 Samuel 17:27-29; 1 Kings 2:7
c) Receiving a person as a disciple
i) Just as a cup of cold water
ii) That person will not lose his reward

MINISTERING FOR THE LORD IN THE EARLY DAYS

1. Support was not easily forthcoming

a) Many had no means of support
b) Ministry was much harder

2. Support for Ministry

a) This was taught by the Apostle Paul
b) Instruction for support was carefully taught (1 Corinthians 9)
i) Provision was to be made
ii) This was a basic “right”

CONCLUSION

1. The challenge to support well

2. The blessing of the supporters

3. A word that we must seek to learn well and practise
