STUDIES IN THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW

Text: Matthew 11

Subject: Revealed to Babes

25 At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.
26 Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.
27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
28 Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Matthew 11:25-30

1. The Prayer of the Lord Jesus Christ

a) Simple and spontaneous

b) Appreciation of what God has done

i) Truth hidden to the so-called “wise and prudent”

ii) Truth revealed to babes

2. The Revealed Truth

a) Perfect Knowledge of the Father
Known only to the Son

b) Perfect knowledge of the Son
Known only to the Father

c) Revelation of Truth
As the Lord Jesus would reveal

i) Not to the wicked and unrighteous

ii) But to the righteous who follow the Son

3. A wonderful Invitation

a) To all who labour and are heavy laden

b) The Lord promises “rest”

4. An important challenge

a) To learn from the Lord Jesus

i) He is gentle

ii) He is lowly in heart

b) To take His yoke upon our shoulders

c) And He will give rest for the soul

5. The yoke of the Lord Jesus

a) It is described as “easy”

b) It is also described as “light”

SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS TEACHING

1. The way of the Pharisees/ scribes

a) Legalistic

b) No rest

c) Heavy

d) Futility at the end of the day

2. The way of the Lord Jesus

a) Salvation

b) Service

c) Strength

d) Grace and mercy for life and ministry

3. The challenge

a) To give heed

b) To respond humbly

c) To follow the Lord as Disciples
