EVENING MESSAGE Sunday,                                  12 March 2017 Text: Jeremiah 5-10, 30; 13, 24

I WILL NOT MAKE A COMPLETE END OF YOU Jeremiah 5:18

1. Stated in the context of the Punishment from the Lord

a) Do not make a complete end Go up on her walls and destroy but do not make a complete end Jeremiah 5:10
i) Destruction ordered Take away her branches, for they are not the LORD’s Jeremiah 5:10
ii) Treachery The house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt treacherously with me, says the LORD God Jeremiah 5:11
iii) Lies They have lied about the LORD, and said, “It is not He” Neither will evil things come upon us, Nor shall we see sword or famine Jeremiah 5:12
iv) The false prophets The prophets become wind, for the word is not in them Jeremiah 5:13-14
v) Invasion of the Babylonians I will bring a nation against you… Jeremiah 5:15-17
b) Not a complete end Nevertheless in those days, says the LORD. I will not make a complete end of you Jeremiah 5:18
i) Querying the LORD It will be when you say, “Why does the LORD our God do all these things to us?” Jeremiah 5:19
ii) The sin of forsaking the LORD and serving foreign gods Just as you have forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so you shall serve aliens in a land that is not yours. Jeremiah 5:19
iii) Fear of the LORD Do you not fear Me? Says the LORD Do you not tremble at My presence, who have placed the sand As the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass beyond it? Jeremiah 5:22
iv) A defiant and rebellious heart But this people have a defiant and rebellious heart, they have revolted and departed. They do not say in their heart, “Let us now fear the LORD our God” Who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season. He reserves for us the appointed weeks of the harvest. Jeremiah 5:23-24
v) Iniquities Your iniquities have turned these things away, and your sins have withheld Good things from you Jeremiah 5:25
Shall I not punish you for these things? Says the LORD, Shall I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this? Jeremiah 5:29
vi) An astonishing and horrible thing The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule by their own power And My People love to have it so. But what would you do in the end? Jeremiah 5:30-31
c) Not a complete end- Re-stated
For I am with you, says the LORD, to save you; Though I make a full end of the nations where I have scattered you, Yet I will not make a complete end of you. But I will correct you in justice, and will not let you go altogether unpunished. Jeremiah 30:11
i) I am with you
ii) A full end of the nations
iii) Yet I will not make a complete end of you
iv) I will correct you in justice
v) And will not let you go altogether unpunished
You shall be My people, and I will be your God Jeremiah 30:22

3. How His People should regard the LORD

3. They were special messages from the Lord

a) Wrong ideas to be addressed and corrected
b) These messages were to be acted upon

c) Appeals made

5. The responses

a) Dismal
b) Negative

6. Hence the Visions and Symbols

a) New messages
b) Sobering words from God
c) Even more startling imagery given

A. The Symbol of the Linen Sash Jeremiah 13:1-11

1. The Significance of the Linen Sash

a) As a sash clings to the waist of a man
b) So have I caused the whole house of Israel to cling to Me, says the LORD
c) That they may become My People Jeremiah 13:11
i) For renown
ii) For praise
iii) For glory
d) God’s Original Plan for His people
i) Reviewed
ii) Re-evaluated in the current context ( Note the word “Euphrates”)

2. A solemn reality

a) A ruined sash
b) Profitable for nothing Jeremiah 13:7
c) Reasons:-
i) Pride of Judah; great pride of Jerusalem Jeremiah 13:8
ii) Evil people who refuse to hear My words Jeremiah 13:10
iii) Who follow the dictates of their heart Jeremiah 13:10
iv) And walk after other gods (worship/service) Jeremiah 13:10

B. The Vision of the Two Baskets of Figs Jeremiah 24

1. One Basket: Bad Figs Jeremiah 24:2

a) They are bad
b) They cannot be eaten

2. Another Basket: Good Figs

a) They are very good
b) They were good for consumption

C. Significance

1. I will acknowledge them Jeremiah 24:5

2. I sent them away for their own good Jeremiah 24:5

3. I will set My eyes on them for good Jeremiah 24:6

4. I will bring them back to this land Jeremiah 24:6

5. I will build them and not pull them down Jeremiah 24:6

6. I will plant them and not pluck them up Jeremiah 24:6

7. Then I will give them a heart to know Me Jeremiah 24:7

8. And they shall be My people Jeremiah 24:7

9. And I will be their God Jeremiah 24:7

10. They shall return to Me with their whole heart Jeremiah 24:7
