“IN THE SCROLL OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME”

Message Notes

(I) THE MESSIAH’S REFERENCE TO THE SCROLL…THE WHOLE OF SCRIPTURE

1. A prophecy concerning the Messiah making reference to the whole of Scripture

“Then I said, “Behold, I come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart.”Psalm 40:7

“Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come— In the volume of the book it is written of Me—
To do Your will, O God.’ ” Hebrews 10:7

a) The scroll is a reference to the scrolls of papyri on which the Scripture was written

b) The author of Hebrews used the word “volume of the book”…a similar idea

c) Reference is to the whole of Scripture

2. An example of the Messiah making reference to Scripture (Luke 24:44)

a) The book would consist of “the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms”

b) The Messiah understood all of Scripture and made reference to it


(II) THE RECORDING OF SCRIPTURE CONCERNING THE MESSIAH

“Then I said, “Behold, I come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me.” Psalm 40:7

a) Much have been written

b) Through the writings of many

i) Moses

ii) David

iii) The prophets


2. Many recordings of the Messiah

a) The law…written by Moses

“He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise His heel.” Genesis 3:15

“The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst from your brethren.” Deuteronomy 18:15

b) The Psalms…written by David

“You are My Son today I have begotten you.” Psalm 2:7

“The Lord said to my Lord,” Sit at My right hand.” Psalm 110

c) The Prophets

“Behold! My Servant whom I uphold.” Isaiah 42:1

“Even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight.” Malachi 3:1

3. Knowledge of the Messiah concerning the Scripture written of Him

“Then I said, “Behold, I come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart.”Psalm 40:7

a) The Messiah came with the knowledge of Himself

b) His delight was to do the will of God…found in the Scripture

c) The Messiah must first know the law well by hiding it in His heart

d) God would have revealed to Him (Isaiah 50)

(III) THE REASONS FOR KNOWING ALL THAT IS WRITTEN OF HIM

“Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come— In the volume of the book it is written of Me—
To do Your will, O God.’ ” Hebrews 10:7

1. His purpose in coming…to fulfil all that was written of Him

2. His regard for the Prophetic word…that they will be fulfilled by Him

3. His demonstration of power in fulfilling the will of His Father completely

“Then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second.” Hebrews 10:9


4. The Messiah’s passion for fulfilling the will and work of God

a) Seen as food to the Lord

“Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.’ ” John 4:34

b) Seen with much urgency

“I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” John 9:4

(IV) RESPONDING TO THE EXAMPLE OF THE LORD JESUS

1. Gaining good knowledge of the Scripture

2. Hiding the Lord’s Word in our hearts

3. Knowing God’s purpose for our life

4. Seeing the will of God in the Scriptures

5. Passion for the will and the work of God

6. Fulfilling Scripture as the Lord did
