INTRODUCTION

1. Glorying in our knowledge of God

a. To understand the Lord   (Jeremiah 9:23-24)
b. To know the Lord
c. One of the ways to know the Lord is through His titles

2. The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel

a. This is one of the titles that is used to refer to God   (Jeremiah 46:25)
b. It consists of two parts:
i. “The LORD of hosts”
ii. “The God of Israel”
c. The two parts are placed in juxtaposition

THE LORD OF HOSTS, THE GOD OF ISRAEL

1. “The LORD of hosts”

a. It is a reference to God’s place at the head of the angelic hosts
b. In application, it can be used to refer to the Lord’s power and authority to judge the nations   (Jeremiah 46:1)
i. Egypt is an example of a nation that the LORD of hosts judged   (Jeremiah 46:2)
ii. Egypt would be conquered by Babylon
iii. They would go into captivity   (Jeremiah 46:18-19)
iv. They would be punished   (Jeremiah 46:25)
c. The other nations would be judged by the LORD of hosts too   (Jeremiah 47-51)

2. “The God of Israel”

a. Judah had gone the way of the Gentiles   (Jeremiah 10:2)
i. They would be punished alongside all the other nations   (Jeremiah 9:25-26)
ii. They did not know or understand God   (Jeremiah 9:3, 6)
iii. They did not seek God either
iv. They also deserved the judgment of the LORD of hosts
b. But God would make a distinction between Judah and the other nations   (Jeremiah 46:28)
i. God will make a complete end of all the nations
ii. But God will not make a complete end of Judah
c. He will correct them   (Jeremiah 46:28)
i. Correction was right
ii. God could not leave them wholly unpunished
d. He will save them from afar   (Jeremiah 46:27)
e. His presence was with them   (Jeremiah 46:28)

APPLICATION

1. Our challenge to know and understand the Lord   (Jeremiah 9:23-24)

2. To appreciate the Lord afresh

a. He is indeed the LORD of hosts
b. But He is also our God
