Message Notes

(I) NO PROPER UNDERSTANDING OF WHO JESUS IS

1. Astonishment at Him

“Just as many were astonished at you, So His visage was marred more than any man, And His form more than the sons of men” Isaiah 52:14

2. No desire for Him

“…He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.” Isaiah 53:2

3. Hiding of faces from Him

“…And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him…” Isaiah 53:3

4. No esteeming of Him

“…He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.” Isaiah 53:3

(II) THE PROPER UNDERSTANING OF CHRIST AND HIS WORK OF BEARING OF SINS

“…He bore the sin of many…” Isaiah 53:12b

1. The divine law system allows for One to bear the sins of all

“…And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53:6

2. Jesus could do it

a) He was sinless

“Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”… who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree…” 1 Peter 2:22, 24 cf. Hebrews 9:14

b) He could bear the guilt of our sins

“Surely, He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows…” Isaiah 53:4

c) He could bear the penalty of our sins

“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him…” Isaiah 53:5

3) Jesus wanted to do it

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” John 15:13

(III) THE CONTINUING WORK OF THE LORD JESUS

1. Continuing work of dealing with our sins

“…And made intercession for the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:12 cf. Hebrews 4:14, 16, 7:25

2. Continuing work of being our Shepherd

For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” 1 Peter 2:25
