(I) THE CONCEPT OF BEING CALLED

1. General calling to salvation

“Called of Jesus Christ…” Romans 1:6

“Called to be saints….” Romans 1:7

2. Specific Calling to serve

“Called to be an apostle….” Romans 1:1

3. Source of Calling is God

a) It is God who gives the honor

“Called by God…” Hebrews 5:4

b) It is God who designates

“Called by God….” Hebrews 5:10

(II) THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING CALLED BY GOD TO SERVE

1. No one takes this honor upon himself (Hebrews 5:4)

a) No man can appoint himself ( Numbers 16:1-40 )

b) The example of Aaron ( Exodus 28:1 )

2. God will take him out of men (Hebrews 5:1)

a) Appointed by God for men ( Hebrews 5:1 )

b) To be compassionate to men ( Hebrews 5:1 )

3. God appointed the Lord Jesus as High Priest (Hebrews 5:5)

a) Through His ordination ( Hebrews 5:5 )

b) Through the prophetic word ( Hebrews 5:6 )

(III) THE LORD’S PERSONAL FULFILLMENT OF HIS CALLING

1. Unpresumptuous

“So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest….” Hebrews 5:5

2. Deep prayers and supplications

“Who in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him…and was heard because of His godly fear.” Hebrews 5:7

a) Vehement cries

b) Tears

3. Learning Obedience

“Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.” Hebrews 5:7

(IV) THE PARTAKING OF THE HEAVENLY CALLING

“Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him…” Hebrews 3:1-2

3. Consider Jesus as our example in fulfilling His calling

4. Seeking to be faithful to Him who appointed us
