(I) THE CHURCH (HOUSE) OF CHRIST THAT WE WANT TO BE PART OF

“Whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.” Hebrews 3:6

1. Being part of Christ’s house

a) This is the house of Christ

b) It is a reference to the church

c) We are to be part of the house of Christ…the church

2. Understanding the house of Christ (Ephesians 2:19-22)

a) Fellow citizens

b) Household of God

c) Holy temple

d) Dwelling place of God


(II) THE COMPARISON AND CONTRAST BETWEEN CHRIST AND MOSES AND THEIR HOUSES

1. The similarity between Christ and Moses in being faithful

“Who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.” Hebrews 3:2

a) The word “house” is a reference to the tabernacle

b) The faithfulness of Moses to all His house

c) The faithfulness of Christ

2. The superiority of Christ over Moses in glory

“For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.” Hebrews 3:3, 4

a) The word “more” …pleion…greater, much more…

b) The house of Christ…a reference to the church

c) Christ is the builder of the church…the house

d) Moses was not the builder of the house

e) As such, Christ is counted worthy to have more glory and honour than Moses

3. The Sonship of Christ in contrast to the servanthood of Moses…

“And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, but Christ as a Son over His own house” Hebrews 3:5, 6

a) Moses is only seen as servant in His house

b) Christ is regarded as Son of the House

(III) THE CONDITION OF BEING PART OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST

“Whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.” Hebrews 3:6

1. A conditional sentence

a) The use of “If”…a third class conditional sentence

b) It is an undetermined result

c) Uncertainty about whether they are truly part of

2. Conditions

a) Continue to hold fast to the confidence and rejoicing of the hope

b) Continue to hold fast to the end

3. Problems that prevented the fulfilling of these conditions

a) Hardening of the heart

b) Going astray

c) Unbelief

d) Departing from God

e) Hardening of the heart
