(I) POWERFUL REASONS TO BE DILIGENT

1. Promise of eternal rest

“Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest…” Hebrews 4:1

2. Prospect of obtaining eternal rest one day

“Since therefore it remains that some must enter it….” Hebrews 4:6

3. Prevention of falling spiritually

“Let us therefore be diligent lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.” Hebrews 4:11

4. High Priestly ministry of Christ

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest…” Hebrews 4:14

(II) PERILOUS THINGS THAT HINDER US FROM BEING DILIGENT

1. Disobedience

“Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience…” Hebrews 4:6

“Lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.” Hebrews 4:11

2. Unbelief

“But the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.” Hebrews 4:2

3. Hardening of the heart

“Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” Hebrews 4:7

4. Misconception

“For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day.” Hebrews 4:8

(III) PERSONAL CHALLENGE TO BE DILIGENT

“Let us therefore be diligent to enter than rest….” Hebrews 4:11

1. Fear and Diligence go together

“Let us fear…” Hebrews 4:1

2. Faith in Word of God and diligence go together

a) Diligently Believing in the word of God

“For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: “So I swore in My wrath, They
shall not enter My rest.” Hebrews 4:3

b) Diligently applying the word and checking our heart with it

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12


3. Fundamental understanding of the omniscience of God and diligence go together

“And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:13

4. Faithful Praying and diligence go together

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
