"THE-LORD-WILL-PROVIDE"

(I) THE NAME OF GOD WITH REFERENCE TO HIS PROVISION

“And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-will-provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Genesis 22:14

1. The name of a place

a) Specially named by Abraham

b) A special place of experience with God

2. “The-Lord-will-provide”… Adonai (Jehovah) Jireh

a) A name that reflects who God is…Adonai (Jehovah)…a revered name

b) A name that reflects the provision of God

c) A name that brings assurance of the future

(II) THE DISCOVERY OF GOD’S PROVISION

1. A test concerning God’s provision

a) A most difficult test for Abraham to sacrifice his own son (Genesis 22:1-7)

b) A great faith in God and His provision

“And Abraham said “My son God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering” Genesis 22:8

2. God’s word of His provision

a) Intervention of the Angel of the Lord (Genesis 22:11)

b) An assessment of Abraham’s faith (Genesis 22:12)

c) The provision of the sacrificial lamb (Genesis 22:13)

3. A commemoration of God’s provision (Genesis 22:14)

a) Personally experienced

b) Faith in God verified

(III) THE PRINCIPLE OF GOD’S PROVISION

“By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son – blessing I will bless you and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.” Genesis 22:16, 17

1. Faith in action

a) Did not withhold his son

d) His faith caused him to act

2. Faith working with works

“Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.” James 2:21-24

a) His faith was working with his works

b) His justification came through works…as part of his faith

3. God will greatly bless

a) Blessing I will bless

b) Multiplying I will multiply

(IV) LOOKING AHEAD IN 2013

1. Begin the year with faith (Great faith) that God will truly provide

2. Deepen our understanding of God’s provision

3. Exercise our faith in Adonai Jireh to provide for our every need
