THE BAPTISM OF JESUS

FOUR PERSPECTIVES

  1. Matthew’s Perspective

a) John’s reluctance to baptise the Lord Jesus
b) The heavens opened
c) God’s voice was heard
d) The Spirit of God like a dove descended and rested upon the Lord Jesus
e) With deep affection
            “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”          Matthew 3:17
  1. Mark’s perspective

a) The heavens opened
b) The Spirit like a dove descending upon the Lord Jesus
c) With deep affection
            “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”        Mark 1:11
  1. Luke’s Perspective

a) Jesus was praying as He was baptised
b) The heavens were opened
c) The Holy Spirit as a dove descended upon Him
d) With deep affection
            “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased”            Luke 3:22
  1. John’s perspective

a) The testimony of John the Baptiser was recorded
b) He presented the Lord Jesus as the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the worldc) He bears witness to the fact that the Holy Spirit descended on the Lord Jesus

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

a) The Lamb of God
b) As the Son of God
c) As the Messiah
d) As the One who will baptise with the Holy Spirit
e) As the great High Priest of God Hebrews 5:1-11
  1. Different Meaning

His Baptism was different from what John offered to the multitudes

a) He was not a sinner
b) He was sinless
c) He was the Perfect Lamb of God
  1. Anointing for public ministry

He was commencing His public ministry

a) His roles include the following:-
i) Prophet
ii) Priest
iii) King
b) The anointing of the Holy Spirit
c) The approval from God the Father
