INTRODUCTION

1. The gravity of Life and Death

2. Life is often taken for granted

a) Existence
b) Meaning
c) Longevity

3. Life is sometimes not well comprehended

a) Goals of life
i) Wealth
ii) Status
iii) Luxuries
b) Spiritual Considerations 
i) Not given as much attention
ii) God in our life not well understood

4. Death is a jarring reality

a) Sickness
b) Accidents
c) Suicide
d) Natural death

AN IMPORTANT STATEMENT

1. This was uttered by the Lord Jesus Christ

“I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come” John 8:21

a) When the Lord Jesus goes away
i) Much is lost
ii) Opportunity to learn and to find salvation is gone
b) You will seek Me
i) They will not find Him
ii) They will remain lost
c) You will die in your sin
i) Unrepentant
ii) Unforgiven
d) Where I go you cannot come
i) Entrance into the Kingdom of God
ii) One must be born again
iii) One must receive the Lord Jesus as Saviour

TOTAL MISUNDERSTANDING

1. The response of the Jews

a) Typical
b) Sneering
“Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come.’” John 8:22

2. Their response

a) Reflects ignorance
b) Reflects a hardened heart

ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO EXPLAIN WHO HE IS

1. The Lord Jesus explains who He is

a)  “You are from beneath” John 8:23a
In contrast, “I am from above” John 8:23b
b) “You are of this world” John 8:23c
In contrast, “I am not of this world” John 8:23d

2. Word of warning given again

a) “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins” John 8:24a
b) “For if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins” John 8:24b

THE STUBBORNESS OF THE JEWS

1. The Jews repeated their question

“Who are You?” John 8:26a

2. The consistent reply of the Lord Jesus

a) “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning” John 8:26a
b) There was no point repeating Himself

3. Judgment warned

a) “I have many things to say and to judge concerning you” John 8:26a
b) This Judgment comes from God Himself
i) God
“He who sent Me is true” John 8:26b
ii) The message
“I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him” John 8:26c

NO COMPREHENSION FROM THE JEWS

1. “They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father” John 8:27

2. Their failure to comprehend

a) Sinful
b) Arrogance
c) Ignorance
d) Stubbornness

 A DEEP AND PROFOUND WORD

1. Lifting up the Son of Man

“When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He” John 8:28a

a) Literal lifting up: The Cross
b) Figurative lifting up:
i) That the Lord Jesus was more than Man (Son of Man)
ii) Then they will know who He is

2. Taught by the Father

“I do nothing of Myself, but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things” John 8:28b

a) The Lord Jesus never chose His own way
b) His was a faithful obedience to the Father’s word given to Him

3. Not alone

“He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him” John 8:29

a) The Father’s Presence felt
b) The things that please the Father

CONCLUSION

1. Life and Death

These are grave matters that demand our time and attention!

a) Believing in the Lord
b) Knowing His teachings
c) Following Him
