Subject: Evangelism

Focus: “Judge with righteous judgment”

INTRODUCTION

1. The problem of Unbelief

a) It is complex
b) It is deep-seated
c) It is personal
d) It involves prejudice
e) It also involves sin

2. Helping the Jews to understand

a) The Lord Jesus
b) His miracles
c) The Sabbath law
d) How to make righteous judgments

THE LAW OF MOSES

1. Not keeping the Law

a) Moses
“Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law” John 7:19
b) This was a serious charge

2. But there was no denial

a) All have broken the Law
b) The Breaking of the Law has penalties
c) The Jews should look into the Law and their hearts candidly
d) Hypocrisy and self-righteousness were never addressed

THE PROBLEM OF SECRET SIN

1. Secret faults (Psalm 19:12)

a) Errors
b) Presumption (Numbers 15:30-31)

2. Hidden sin (Psalm 90:8)

a) Iniquity
b) Secret

3. Surfacing this sin problem

“Why do you seek to kill Me?” John 7:19b

a) The Lord had known this
b) He brought this out into the open 

4. Denial of this Sin

a) “You have a demon” John 7:20a
b) “Who is seeking to kill You?” John 7:20b
c) In refusing to deal with their sin

Truth that the Lord Jesus taught could not be comprehended

ONE WORK OF THE LORD JESUS

1. “I did one work, and you all marvel” John 7:21

a) The healing of a lame man on the Sabbath (John 5:1-18)
i) To heal on any day was good and right
ii) The Sabbath was not broken if healing took place on a Sabbath
b) Desire to kill the Lord noted (John 5:16-18)
i) The Sabbath had been “broken”
ii) The Lord Jesus had made Himself equal with God

2. Circumcision

a) From the fathers (John 7:22; Genesis 17)
b) Circumcision on the Sabbath (John 7:22-23)
i) The law is not considered broken
ii) Circumcision has to be on the 8th Day, even if it is on the Sabbath

3. Anger directed against the Lord Jesus

a) He made a man completely well
b) On the Sabbath (John 7:23)

4. Was there justification for this anger?

The Plain answer is NO!

MAKING RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENTS

1. Judging according to appearance

a) This is shallow
b) Unwise
c) Inaccurate

2. Call not to do this

“Do not judge according to appearance” John 7:24a

a) The Jews had judged the Lord Jesus
b) According to what they saw… on the surface
c) This practice was wrong and it ought to cease

3. Righteous judgment

“But judge with righteous judgment” John 7:24b

a) According to knowledge
b) According to truth
c) According to wisdom

CONCLUSION

1. The following problems continued to exist

a) Hypocrisy
b) Judgmentalism
c) Ignorance
d) Hypocrisy

2. Consequently, faith in the Lord Jesus is not found

a) Salvation remained elusive
b) Regeneration was not experienced
c) The individual remained as he was
