Text: John 5:24-30

Subject: Evangelism

Focus: The fear of Judgment

INTRODUCTION

1. The Fear of Divine Judgment is very real to many

2. Many fear that they will be judged by God for their many sins

3. How can we help people overcome their fear of Divine Judgment?

THE PROBLEM OF SIN AND JUDGMENT

1. Sin is a fact of life

a) All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23)
b) The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23a)
c) But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23b)

2. With Sin comes Fear

a) Fear of being judged by God
b) Fear of consequences of God’s judgment

MAN’S ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM OF JUDGMENT

1. Do good works

2. Perhaps God will overlook and forgive

3. Not a very safe or satisfactory answer

4. Important Texts:

a) A man is not justified by the works of the law (Galatians 2:16a)
b) But by faith in Jesus Christ (Galatians 2:16b)
c) Not by works of righteousness which we have done (Titus 3:5a)
d) But according to His mercy He saved us (Titus 3:5b)

A WONDERFUL WORD OF PROMISE BY THE LORD JESUS

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” John 5:24

1. A word of strong assurance

“Most assuredly, I say to you” John 5:24a

2. Two things to take note of:

a) Hearing
“He who hears My word” John 5:24b
i) This is a reference to the teachings of the Lord Jesus
ii) This is a reference to the Gospel of the Lord
iii) The word of God will generate faith and life
b) Believing
“And believes in Him who sent Me” John 5:24c
i) Believing in God the Father
ii) Believing in the Lord Jesus whom the Father has sent

3. The promise of Everlasting Life

“Has everlasting life” John 5:24d

a) He has everlasting life
b) He is given this eternal life
c) From the moment he hears and believes

4. No Judgment

“And shall not come into judgment” John 5:24e

a) There will be no Divine judgment
b) This is a wonderful word of promise
c) It is part and parcel of the salvation that God gives

5. From death to life

“But has passed from death into life” John 5:24f

a) If there had been Judgment, there would have been death
b) But through faith in the Lord Jesus
i) The death sentence is removed
ii) The sinner is pardoned fully
iii) He is no longer seen as a sinner
iv) He has become a child of God
He is born again of the Holy Spirit

AN APPLICATION OF THIS TRUTH TO THE PRESENT

“25Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.”

“28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.”
