Text: John 13:18-20

Subject: A Short Study about Judas betraying the Lord Jesus I

INTRODUCTION

1. The Betrayal of the Lord Jesus is an important subject

2. From the human standpoint, this betrayal is almost unthinkable

3. We need a Biblical perspective:

a) Prophetic word (Psalm 41:9)
b) The word of the Lord Jesus (John 13:18-20)

18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’

19 Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.

20 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

John 13:18-20

1. I do not speak concerning all of you (concerning the betrayal) (John 13:18a)

a) What the Lord Jesus was saying
b) He was not speaking to all
c) He was speaking about Judas and to him
d) Did Judas know that he was going to betray the Lord Jesus?
Yes!

2. I know whom I have chosen (John 13:18b)
This phrase is to be understood in the light of the Calling of the Twelve.

a) Matthew 10
“When He had called His twelve to Him…” Matthew 10:1
b) Mark 3
Called to Him those He Himself wanted” Mark 3:13
c) Luke 9
“Then He called His twelve together…” Luke 9:1
d) John 6
“Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil” John 6:70

3. The use of the word “Called”

a) This word was used to describe how the Lord Jesus called the Twelve
b) The Synoptic Gospel writers avoided the word “chosen”
c) All Twelve were “Called”
d) But not all were “chosen”

4. John’s use of the word “chosen”

a) Called and Chosen for the Eleven faithful ones
“I know whom I have chosen” John 13:18b
b) Called but not chosen to remain an Apostle

5. But that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’

a) The Scriptures cited (Psalm 41:9)
b) And Scriptures will be fulfilled
i) Prophetic nature
ii) Power of the Lord and the Scriptures
iii) Fulfilment is inevitable
c) A Psalm written by David
i) He understood the pain of being betrayed
ii) David had given his friendship
iii) But the false friend will rise up and raise his heel against the host
d) The Lord Jesus
i) The Lord had befriended him
ii) He had taught Judas
iii) He had trusted him (with the money bag)
iv) He had given him an envious privilege of being one of the Twelve
e) Judas
i) He was called but was never cleansed
ii) He followed the Lord but never found faith salvation in the Lord
iii) He had allowed Satan to fill heart

PROPHETIC FOREWARNING

19 Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.

20 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

John 13:19-20

1. This word was a prophetic word

a) The Disciples must believe that the Lord Jesus was not surprised
b) The Master was not caught off-guard when Judas betrayed him

2. A cryptic word to Judas

a) Receiving a disciple sent was to receive the Lord Jesus Himself
b) Receiving the Lord Jesus was to receive God Himself
c) This was something He said earlier (Matthew 10:40)
d) Would Judas yet listen?
e) Had Judas ever listened properly?

CONCLUSION

1. Let us check out salvation

a) Do we really believe in the Lord Jesus?
b) Have we been cleansed?

2. Do we understand what it means to be called?

3. Do we understand what it means to be chosen?

4. A true believer:

a) He will never betray the Lord Jesus
b) He will never allow Satan to fill his heart
c) He will never lift his heel against the Lord Jesus
