(I) JACOB PREPARES TO GO TO EGYPT

1. He left Canaan

2. Came to Beersheba and offered sacrifices to the Lord (Genesis 46:1)

3. He is addressed as “Israel” (Genesis 32:28)

 

(II) GOD MEETS WITH JACOB

1. He calls Jacob (Genesis 46:2)

a) Gently

b) Tenderly


2. Kind words of assurance

a) I am God, the God of your father (Genesis 46:3a)

b) Do not fear to go down to Egypt (Genesis 46:3b)

c) I will make you a great nation there (Genesis 46:3c)

d) I will go down with you (Genesis 46:4a)

e) I will surely bring you up again (Genesis 46:4b)

f) Joseph will put his hand on your eyes (Genesis 46:4c)

(III) JACOB JOURNEYS ON TO EGYPT

1. He arose from this meeting with God (Genesis 46:5a)

a) With greater confidence

b) With a renewed spirit

2. He was quite old and needed to be carried by his sons (Genesis 46:5b)


3. Pharaoh’s provision of carts (Genesis 46:5c)

(IV) A BRIEF GENEALOGICAL NOTE

1. Names of the sons of Jacob

All the sons were included


2. Seventy people (Genesis 46:27)

(Inclusion of Jacob, Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim)

 

(V) WONDERFUL REUNION AT GOSHEN

1. Jacob arrives in Goshen (Genesis 46:28)

2. Joseph has a deeply emotional re-union with his father (Genesis 46:29)

3. Jacob expresses that he is now ready to die (Genesis 46:30)

 

(VI) BRIEFING THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL TO MEET WITH PHARAOH

1. Joseph will present his family to the Pharaoh (Genesis 46:31)

2. The use of the word “shepherd”

This word was to be avoided, because this was a profession that was despised by Egyptians (Genesis 46:34)

3. A more general word needed

Occupation with livestock (Genesis 46:33)
