“YOU ARE MY TRUST FROM MY YOUTH”

June 01, 2014

Can God Be Trusted Fully?

Can God be trusted fully with reference to our life … our entire life? My answer is an absolute and resounding “Yes”. The Psalmist wrote Psalm 71 as he learnt to cultivate this continuing trust in God.

“For You are my hope, O Lord God;
You are my trust from my youth.”

Psalm 71:5

In the Old Testament, the word “trust” has the idea of confidence. God is someone whom we can place our full confidence and trust in for now and for the future. The Psalmist when he was young learnt to place his trust in God and he found Him to be truly real and alive until he was old. As the Psalmist hoped in God with regard to his deliverance, he continued to trust in Him. He trusted in Him when God did not seem to answer his prayers. It is not impossible for a young person to learn to trust God with his entire future. The Psalmist did so and so can you. How can we go about doing this?

1. Recognising God’s Hand In Our Life

“By You I have been upheld from birth;
You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb.”

Psalm 71:6

With eyes of faith, the Psalmist was able to recognise that the Lord was there with him from birth. It was God who brought about a safe delivery and He had been upholding him since he came into this world. It was this righteous Lord who had been hedging around him and watching out for him. Young people, can you also see how God has been upholding you from birth till this day? The Lord has watched over and kept you for the first part of this year, through exams and illness. Can you recognise and acknowledge this?

2. Experiencing God As A Strong Refuge In Our Life

“In You, O lord, I put my trust …
Be my strong refuge …”

Psalm 71:1, 3

“But You are my strong refuge.”
Psalm 71:7

The Psalmist also experienced the reality of God as his Rock of Refuge even as he sought to place his trust in Him. As wicked and unrighteous men sought for his life, he determined to put his trust in a righteous God. He prayed that God would be his strong refuge. And the Lord was indeed a strong refuge to him. So much so, the Psalmist was able to declare this with confidence. Have you experienced the Lord as your strong refuge this year? Let’s seek to be able to speak of the Lord as our rock and fortress.

3. Giving Constant Praise To God

“My praise shall be continually of You.”
Psalm 71:6

“Let my mouth filled with Your praise
And with Your glory all the day.”

Psalm 71:8

The Psalmist was deeply appreciative of the Lord’s work in his life. He sought to give praise to God for all that He had done. He determined that he would give praise to Him continually. His mouth would be filled with praise and glory for Him throughout the day. The Psalmist was just so thankful to the Almighty for His deliverance. Let’s take time to ponder and think about how great God is to us. Isn’t it truly amazing to know that God has always been looking out for us from the first day of our existence? Let’s give Him joyful and heartfelt praise each day and every day.
