THE REALITY OF THE BIRTH OF A DIVINE KING

Every lesson of faith that we learn from the Scriptures should be treasured. Pastor was teaching at the ISS Sunday School lesson on how the birth narratives of the Lord Jesus are not just meant for Christmas. They are also meant to be taught and appreciated at any time throughout the year.

The story of the wise men and how they came to search for the Lord Jesus continues to fascinate me. It is indeed amazing how they were able to understand the Lord Jesus for who He is.

“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.’”
Matthew 2:1-2

For the wise men, the birth of a divine King was very real.

1. REVELATION CONCERNING THE BIRTH OF A DIVINE KING

There was revelation given by God to these wise men. These wise men must have had some faith in God. The Lord had revealed to them the birth of Jesus through the appearance of this special star. When they saw the star, they were able to piece things together that there was the birth of the Messianic King of the Jews. They recognized the birth of the spiritual King of the Jews.

2. HIGH REGARD GIVEN TO THIS DIVINE KING

The word “Behold” is meant to draw attention to what is described with reference to the Lord Jesus. The wise men sought to find this divine King. The question raised by them at Jerusalem gives emphasis to the One who is born the King of the Jews. There is that qualitative nature of the kingship of the Lord Jesus. They considered Him as the true divine King of the Jews. His birth was most significant.

3. RECEIVING FURTHER UNDERSTANDING FROM THE SCRIPTURES CONCERNING THIS DIVINE KING

When Herod asked about where the Christ would be born, the answer came from the Scriptures. It is that out of Bethlehem, there will come a shepherd King (Matthew 2:6). He will specially shepherd the people of Israel. He would be an eternal King who will love His people, care for them, and lead them.

In contrast, Herod was described as a mere physical king (Matthew 2:1). It also shows that his reign was limited to his lifespan on earth. Matthew described later in this chapter that Herod was a most wicked king who did not care for the people. What a huge contrast!

RESPONSE OF FAITH IN WORSHIPPING THIS DIVINE KING

The wise men were able to see that this King although given the title “King of the Jews” was not a king just for the Jews. This was a King that was meant for Gentiles too. This was a divine and eternal King that the wise men who were Gentiles could have faith in. They responded by purposely seeking this great King and to worship Him.

1. FOR SEEKERS

We are Gentiles too. We too can come to understand the Lord Jesus as the divine King of our lives. Let’s seek Him because He cares for you. Let’s find faith in Him as King and learn to worship Him.

2. FOR BELIEVERS

Let’s appreciate even more the Lord Jesus as the divine King in our lives. He is our shepherd King who loves us and rules over all things. Let’s exercise greater faith in Him as we seek to come and worship Him each Saturday at Youth worship.
