THE UNITY OF THE SPIRIT

The Lord God has called us not only to salvation but to be one as God’s people. It is wonderful to see how fellow believers can be integrated as one big family. This sense of oneness in the Church has been created by the Spirit of God.

“The unity of the Spirit”
Ephesians 4:3

He is the One who has given the Church the oneness. Through Christ, both Jews and Gentiles can have access by one Spirit to the Father (Ephesians 2:18). It is also in the Lord Jesus that the Church is being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit (Ephesians 2:22). Our part is to understand this, be part of it and to walk worthy of our calling by maintaining it.

THE WAY TO WALK WORTHY OF OUR CALLING TO BE ONE

“With all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering … in love … in the bond of peace.”
Ephesians 4:2-3

How can we go about walking worthy?

1. WITH COMPLETE HUMILITY, GENTLENESS AND LONGSUFFERING

Complete humility and gentleness are what we should express as we walk worthy together as a Church. Without humility, there will not be the gentleness needed to relate well. There is also the need for us to have the patience to bear with each other not just for the moment but continuously.

2. IN THE STATE OF LOVE AND IN THE BOND OF PEACE

The things that should drive us to be one is a heart of love for each other. We should seek to love each other in a deep way. There should also be the bond of peace that would draw us closer as one.

Gentleness, longsuffering, love and peace…are these not part of the cluster of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22)?

MUCH EFFORT TO WALK WORTHY OF OUR CALLING TO BE ONE

1. LOVINGLY BEARING WITH ONE ANOTHER

“Bearing with one another in love”
Ephesians 4:2

We can learn to bear with all our individual idiosyncrasies through a deep love for each other. It is good that we learn to graciously put up with each other rather than put down each other.

2. BEING THAT MUCH MORE DILIGENT TO KEEP THE UNITY OF THE SPIRIT

“Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
Ephesians 4:3

The word “endeavoring” has the idea of being “that much more diligent”. We are meant to put even more effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

PERSONAL APPLICATION

Maintaining oneness is so crucial to Bethany in order for us to grow further as a Church.

1. Let’s seek to relate to each other with lowliness of mind, meekness and longsuffering.

2. Even though we are unable to be together, let’s seek to still maintain this sense of oneness in love and in peace with each other.

3. Let’s do all we can to maintain the unity of the Spirit.
