WALK IN THE LIGHT

“Lest Darkness Overtake You”

When a torch gives out light in a dark room, it will always pierce the darkness. We know this for a fact. Darkness cannot overcome light. This is also true in the spiritual world. Spiritual light will always overcome spiritual darkness. The light of the Lord and His truths will perpetually defeat the evil one and his falsehood. However, if we do not walk in this light, darkness can overcome us. In the text of John 12, the Lord Jesus had just taught that He would be “lifted up” soon. But the people that he was talking to somehow did not understand Him. They were still in darkness.

“Then Jesus said to them, ‘A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you'”
John 12:35

The word “overtake” in the Greek means to “apprehend”. Darkness can seize and control us when we do not walk in the light. It can continue to blind us. Light will always overcome darkness, but we have to do our part to follow the light.

Making Definite Responses To The Light

When we see the light of the Lord and His word, we must seek to respond to it.

1. The Challenge To Walk While We Have The Light

“A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light”
John 12:35

The Lord Jesus knew that He had a short time with the disciples. While He was with them and the light was still shining in their hearts, they must seek to walk in the light. It was imperative for them to practise what they had learnt. It was vital for them that they sought to live their lives according to the ways of the Lord. If they did not, darkness could come and overwhelm them. Young people, we too must seek to walk in the light.

2. The Challenge To Believe While We Have The Light

“While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”
John 12:36

The Lord Jesus also wanted the disciples to exercise faith in the light. While there was understanding from the Lord, there was a need for them to believe in what they heard. They were not just to start believing but to continue to do so in the light of the Lord’s words. When we believe in the light, we will truly become sons of light. Let’s not allow doubts and unbelief stop us from walking in the light. Let’s exercise faith in the light of the Lord and His word. Let’s seek to shine as true sons of light.
