LIGHT EXPOSES THE DARKNESS

People often think that they can hide their sins in darkness and nobody would know. They can willfully sin in secret, thinking that they would not be noticed. And yet even though these things are done secretly, they are exposed by the light.

“But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light”
Ephesians 5:1

The deep secrets of the heart can be exposed through light shining in their heart. It can convict the heart of sin. All things will be exposed by the light. Every single thing that exposes sin ensures for us that it is truly light. That source of light is the Lord Jesus. His person, His teachings, His life which is full of grace and truth and the life that He gives; they are all light. The truth from the word of God also brings light. Sins in darkness are exposed through light shining in hearts.

THE CALL TO WAKE UP TO THE LIGHT

“Therefore He says:
‘Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light.’”
Ephesians 5:14

Paul quoted this verse quote from Isaiah 60:1:

“Arise, shine;
For your light has come!
And the glory for the Lord is risen upon you.
For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
And deep darkness the people;
But the Lord will arise over you,
And His glory will be seen upon you.
The Gentiles shall come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.”
Isaiah 60:1-3

1. ORIGINAL CONTEXT

This was a prophecy concerning the Lord Jesus arising with His glory over His people. The context of this passage was with reference to how He had given atonement for the people (Isaiah 53). However, many were still continuing in ignorance and sin. They were not responding and rising up to what they were meant to be. This was a call from the Lord to arise and shine as light. The Gentiles and their kings will come to the brightness of their rising from darkness.

2. APPLICATION TO BELIEVERS WHO WERE NOT RESPONDING WELL

Paul applied this with reference to those who were professing Christians but were still sleeping spiritually. The Lord Jesus had given them salvation. They had been redeemed by His blood and blessed with every spiritual blessing. However, they were not living up to their salvation. They were not obeying the word. Everything had been given to them to be the very best that they can be for the Lord. There was no excuse for them not to. Their part now was to follow through.

3. PERSONAL ASPECT

This is the time for us to really consider what the Lord is saying. His word to us is “Awake”. This is a wake up call for all who are sleeping spiritually. We may be saved by the Lord but we may still not walking as sons of light. We may still be living in sin and not doing much about it. This is the time to rise up and the Lord will give us light. Let’s seek to rise up to walk in the light and to shine as light. May Christ shine on us and we in turn may shine for Him. Let’s be that light for others!
