As The Days Of Noah Were

The Lord Jesus is coming at a time that nobody knows. Our Savior’s return and judgment would change human life as we know it. It will bring both ecstatic joy and apocalyptic sorrow at the same time to the known world. No one except the Father Himself knows when this significant yet dreadful moment of time will be. And since the timing of this imminent event is unknowable, there is the danger of people forgetting about it and living as if it will not happen. People carry on with their life as if global judgment will not be meted out.

“But as the days of Noah were, also will the coming of the Son of Man be.”
Matthew 24:37

What was it like during the days of Noah before the flood? People were pre-occupied with their life on this earth. They were indulging in eating and drinking. They were more focused on marrying and having a good time. They were impervious to the warning of Noah concerning the coming deluge (2 Peter 2:5). When the great flood did come and took the people away, it was obviously too late. Young people, today, the world continues to be indifferent to the message of the Lord’s impending judgment, just like it was during the days of Noah. Let’s ensure that we do not be so pre-occupied with our life on this earth that we do have a sanctified consciousness of His coming. Let’s not regret when the Lord Jesus returns.

Being Prepared For The Lord’s Coming

How can we be prepared for the Lord’s coming?

1. Having A Spirit Of Watchfulness And Alertness

“Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.”
Matthew 24:42

The word “watch” in the Greek means to be “vigilant and alert”. The use of the “therefore” denotes a logical reasoning that the Lord Jesus was impressing on His disciples. If no one knows when the Lord will come and bring grave judgment to the world, we want to make sure that we keep watch for His return. The fact that we know that Jesus will come should be good enough reason to be on the alert. A master of the house would be watchful if he knew that a thief was going to rob his house. Even when we do not know the timing of His coming, we should be on guard and be alert simply because we believe in His prophetic word and we know He will come as a thief in the night. This concept of being watchful is reinforced further when the Lord Jesus taught the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:13). As those waiting for the bridegroom to arrive were alert, even so we too must be vigilant in waiting, lest we miss the boat.

2. Having A State Of Readiness

“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
Matthew 24:44

The word “therefore” in the Greek can be translated as “on account of”. This is a strengthened form of “therefore”, different from the first one in verse 42. Since the Lord Jesus is coming at a time we do not know, so much more we want to be in state of readiness. We want to be thoroughly prepared for the Lord’s second coming. There is no point being watchful without being ready for it too. In the text of Luke 12:35, the Lord spoke of how we should be like servants waiting and ready for their master’s return. Their waists are supposed to be girded and their lamps constantly burning. Blessed is the person who, when the master returns, he finds his servant ready to serve Him at any time. Young people, the Lord will come at a time when we least expect Him. Let’s seek to be EVER-READY.
