The Psalmist’s Personal Commitment To Praising The Lord

We have been learning much from the book of Psalms about praising the Lord. May each lesson learned enhance our endeavor to praise Him even more. In the text of Psalm 146, the Psalmist made a definite personal commitment to always give praise to the Lord.

“Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul!
While I live I will praise the Lord;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.”

Psalm 146:1-2

The Psalmist sought to engage his own soul to give honor to the Lord. Praising God should be a soul-felt experience. When we sing to the Lord, it should come from deep within us with all sincerity. The Psalmist also determined that while he lives, he would always seek to praise the Lord. As long as he could still breathe, his mouth would glorify Him. Young people, let’s also determine to make praising God a personal commitment till the day we die.

The Compelling Reasons For Praising God Always

The Psalmist had compelling reasons to praise the Lord. Let me highlight two.

1. Finding Personal Happiness In Hoping In God

“Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help,
Whose hope is in the Lord his God”

Psalm 146:5

The Psalmist wrote of how those who trust in man and his ways during times of trouble would be sorely disappointed. However, when we trust in God as our help, He will not fail us. He who trusts fully in Him will find true happiness. This God who made the heaven, the earth and the oceans will help the needy and the oppressed. He will be there for us when we place our hope in Him. We would experience great happiness because He keeps His promises.

2. Seeing The Lordship Of God Through His Works

“The Lord opens the eyes of the blind,
The Lord raises those who are bowed down;
The Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord shall reign forever –
Your God, O Zion, to all generations.”

Psalm 146:8, 10

Another wonderful aspect of God that causes the Psalmist to praise Him is His lordship. The Lord is sovereign over all things. The title “Lord” is mentioned four times in verses 8-9. The Lord will cause those who are bowed down to rise up. He specially shows His love to the righteous and helps the orphans and widows. But to the wicked, the Lord would execute judgment. Truly, the Lord reigns forever. This is something we should rejoice in at all times. Let’s give praise to God because He is Lord over all things, especially our own life.
