The Problem Of Grappling With All Kinds Of Wrong Feelings

What do we do when things do not go our way? We have come to the half-way mark of the year and perhaps, this year has not been going too well for you. Your exam results are not where you want them to be. You have been struggling with your own sins and waywardness. When things do not go our way, the tendency for us is to grapple with many different feelings: disappointment, frustration, regret, the fear of being ashamed and the list goes on. These were feelings that King David was also grappling with as he wrote Psalm 25. He was deeply concerned about whether his enemies would ultimately triumph over him and he would end up being ashamed (Psalm 25:2). His heart was feeling troubled and in distressed (Psalm 25:17). He was grappling with the sins of his youth (Psalm 25:7) and his continuing sins (Psalm 25:11). As we grapple with these wrong feelings, it is good for us to learn to cultivate our trust in God further.

Learning To Develop A Continuing Trust In The Lord

“To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, I trust in You”
Psalm 25:1

“Let me not be ashamed”
Psalm 25:2

“Indeed, let no one who waits on You be ashamed”
Psalm 25:1

King David sought to trust in the Lord even more. He sought to have a closer relationship with Him. It was to this God that he lifted up his soul in prayer. It was to this God that he sought to have a continuing and deepening trust. From the beginning of this Psalm and at its end, David wrote of placing his trust in Him (Psalm 25:20). He was going to learn to trust and wait on the Lord further. King David placed his personal trust in the Lord and his prayer was that he would not be ashamed. He was also able to see the truth principle that those who trust and wait on Him would not be ashamed too. Young people, let’s not give up hope. Let’s learn to deepen our relationship with God, increase our trust in Him and learn to wait on Him.

Application Of Trust And Waiting On The Lord

1. Waiting On The Lord To Teach And Guide

“Show me Your ways, O Lord;
Teach me Your paths.
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
On You I wait all the day.”
Psalm 25:4-5

When we pray for the Lord to teach us, He would guide us with general understanding of His ways. Then He would teach us specific paths that we can take in life. After this, the Lord would help us see the truth of His word and His ways as He leads us and teaches us further. Let’s learn from our mistakes. Our challenge is to be humble enough for Him to teach and guide in all aspects of our life.

2. Waiting On The Lord For His Mercies

“Remember O Lord, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindness,
For they are from of old.”
Psalm 25:6

The Psalmist also learnt to wait on the Lord by asking Him to remember His mercies and lovingkindness with reference to his life. The Lord would indeed be merciful to us as He has been in the past. Let’s ask the Lord to continue to be merciful as we seek to do our part in studying even harder. Let’s continue to trust in His tender mercies and may He bless us for the next half of the year.
