The Vital Role Of Christ’s Death And Resurrection

As we poignantly remember the Lord’s death on the cross, let’s seek to appreciate it even more. His death and resurrection have great significance with reference to us in being more than conquerors. Paul had recognised how there were many challenges in life and ministry that could cause Christians to feel defeated. He personally had experienced tribulations, persecutions and accusations. And in the midst of all these, his faith in the Lord Jesus enabled him to rise above them. He saw how the Lord’s death and resurrection played a crucial role in enabling him and all Christians to be overcomers.

1. As A Powerful Basis Of God’s Great Grace And Support

“If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?”
Romans 8:31-32

If our God Almighty is committed to us as our Father and Lord, then no one can succeed in rising up against us. The reason is that the Lord’s grace is readily available to us to meet all our needs. If the Lord can give the ultimate gift of His own beloved son, there is nothing that He would withhold with reference to helping us succeed as overcomers. The phrase “freely give” has the idea that it is through God’s grace that all things are given. It is through His grace that we can have salvation (Romans 3:24). It is also through His grace that we can have access to Him and be able to stand strong in faith (Romans 5:2). Furthermore, it is through His grace that we can be filled with the Spirit of God who will lead and enable us (Romans 8). If He did not spare His son but delivered Him up for our sake, even more would He freely give us all things to help us stand against any opposition. This is a powerful basis by which we can exercise faith in prayer and overcome all things.

2. As A Powerful Defence Against Accusations

“Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.”
Romans 8:33-34

The apostle Paul noted how there were people who would bring accusations against God’s people. He saw how the Lord’s death and resurrection and their lasting ramification would be a powerful defence against accusations. One of them is that justification is brought about through the redemption that is in Christ (Romans 3:21-26). Christ can redeem through His resurrection from the dead. It is this salvation in Christ that can help us stand amidst accusations. Another ramification is the Lord’s powerful intercessory role. Because Christ died, overcame death by rising from the dead and is now at the right hand of God, He can powerfully intercede for us for our sins and problems.

3. As A Powerful Demonstration Of The Lord’s Great Love

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
Romans 8:37

The Lord’s death on the cross is also seen as the ultimate expression of love. The Lord God demonstrated His own love towards us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). It is also through His love being poured out in our heart by the Spirit of God that we can have hope in God (Romans 5:5). This hope in God helps us to persevere and to build character to overcome all difficulties. Let’s seek to appreciate the Lord’s love even more that it may empower us to be more than conquerors over and against all the challenges of life.
