Reasons For Meditating On God’s Word

What is it that fills our mind and heart each day? For the Psalmist, despite all the challenges of life, it was the word of God. He sought to meditate on the precious word of God throughout the day. The word “meditate” in Hebrew means to “ponder by talking to oneself”. It is to read aloud the Scriptures and to talk to oneself about them. Why did the Psalmist determine most fervently to reflect and muse over His word? There are some important reasons for us to consider.

1. Because It Brings About God’s Blessings On Our Lives

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water”

Psalm 1:2-3

When we choose not to walk in the ways of the ungodly but to focus on God’s word and to meditate on it, His blessings will be upon our lives. He will make us into strong and fruitful “trees”. When we dwell on His word and follow His will, God’s richest blessings will be upon us. He will prosper us in all that we do.

2. Because It Helps Us To Be Still Before We Sleep

“Be angry, and do not sin.
Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.
Offer the sacrifices of righteousness,
And put your trust in the Lord.”

Psalm 4:4-5

Meditating on the Lord and His word helps us to be still. For the Psalmist, he was struggling with feelings of exasperation because there were those who spoke falsehood against him. He found it hard to sleep at night. It was when he meditated on God before he slept and sought to be still that he found he was able to put His trust in the Almighty. He found peace in his heart and he slept.

3. Because It Helps Us To Start Our Day Right

“Give ear to my words, O Lord,
Consider my meditation.”

Psalm 5:1

The psalmist made meditation a real part of his life. In the morning, before he prayed, he would make time to meditate on the word of God. He chose to think about God and His word and to translate his thoughts into prayer. The psalmist looked up to God for guidance for each new day. Meditating on the word of God will help us to start the day right.

The Challenge To Meditate And Delight In His Word

Young people, let’s seek to reflect on the lessons that we have learnt from the Scriptures. Our challenge is to recall and to meditate on them as much as we can each day. The more we think about God and His truths from the Scriptures, the more they will bring joy and delight to our soul. Let’s take up this challenge to memorise the Scriptures, to meditate on it and to delight in it.
