Personal Commitment To Obey The Word Of God

Are you afraid of making commitments to keep the word of God? Many are. It is easy to declare that we want to keep the word of God. It is not as easy when it comes to the actual performance of it. But, young people, let’s not be apprehensive about making commitments to following the Lord’s ways. May we find the faith and courage to keep trying no matter how many times we may fail. The Psalmist remembered how he had affirmed that he would follow the Lord’s word.

“You are my portion, O Lord;
I have said that I would keep Your words.”

Psalm 119:57

He had seen how God was his portion in life. He was everything to him and he could not help but respond in being determined to keep God’s word. How can we go about doing this?

1. Praying With Our Whole Heart For God’s Mercies

“I entreated Your favor with my whole heart;
Be merciful to me according to Your word.”

Psalm 119:58

The Psalmist sought the Lord in deep prayer first. With his whole heart, he pleaded for the Lord’s favor and mercies so that he could keep His word.

“The earth, O Lord, is full of Your mercy”
Psalm 119:64

Wherever we may go on this earth, the Lord’s mercies are always available. Let’s entreat His help to follow His ways.

2. Thinking Carefully About Our Ways In The Light Of God’s Word

“I thought about my ways,
And turned my feet to Your testimonies.”

Psalm 119:59

The Psalmist also took time to think about his ways. There must have been times when he was tempted to go the wrong way. But after thinking through matters in the light of God’s word, he turned towards keeping His commandments. Young people, we must also learn to think before we act. Let’s not be caught up with our own wayward thoughts and fleshly ways. Let’s always think about our ways and turn towards following His word.

3. Having A Greater Sense Of Readiness To Keep God’s Word

“I made haste, and did not delay
To keep Your commandments.”

Psalm 119:60

As the Psalmist thought about his ways in the light of scriptures, there was a greater sense of readiness to keep the word of God. When the word of God fills our lives, there is the inclination not to be rebellious but to be more obedient to it. Let’s have this willingness to do His word.

4. Thanking God For His Word Even At Midnight

“At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You,
Because of Your righteous judgments.”

Psalm 119:62

When we have truly kept the word of God, it becomes a source of rejoicing and thanksgiving. Whatever the time may be, we will find it normal to rise up to give praise for the Scriptures. Let’s seek to keep God’s commandments despite what we may go through in life. Let’s always give thanks for His word.
