Practising The Principle Of Humility

Humility is what God looks for in our lives. When we humble ourselves before the Lord, it pleases Him most. The Lord’s word says,

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
James 4:10

Before our great and almighty God, we should always be conscious of how insignificant we are and how awesome He is. When we have a lowly spirit, He will grant us His grace. He will also exalt us in due time. Let’s learn to practise this principle of humility, especially in how we relate to people.

Humility In Not Judging A Brother

Humility is well-expressed when we learn not to be judgmental about another brother. When we have a critical spirit, it is easy to speak evil of others.

“He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.”
James 4:11

When we slander or defame a brother, we are indeed judging this brother. We are in fact speaking against the royal law. If you really want to fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, then we must remember this word.

“If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself,’ you do well”
James 2:8

The royal law commands us to love our neighbor as we would ourselves. If we judge a brother, we are not doers of the law. By not living according to the law, we are in fact placing ourselves above the law. We do much wrong when we consider ourselves fit enough to be a judge. We must learn not to slander a brother through making quick judgments of him

Leaving The Judgment To The Lord

It is the Lord who is the ultimate Lawgiver and Judge.

“There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?”
James 4:12

It is the Lord who gave us the law. He is able to both save and destroy the soul. Whatever wrong has been done against an individual, it is best that the judgment be left to the Lord.

“For we know Him who said, ‘Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,’ says the Lord. And again, ‘The Lord will judge His people.’ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
Hebrews 10:30-31

The Lord is a just and holy judge. He will judge fairly. It is best that we leave the area of judgment to the Lord.

Choosing Not To Speak Evil

Brethren, let’s learn not to have a judgmental spirit. Let’s learn to choose not to speak evil against a fellow brother.

“Do not speak evil of one another, brethren.”
James 4:11

James addressed those he wrote to as brethren. What good does it do when we speak evil against a brother or sister? It will profit no one. Instead, an unwise word said could create much hurt and division. Let’s learn not to speak evil of one another. Let’s learn to edify and encourage one another instead.
