Compelling Reasons For Us To Keep The Lord’s Commands

As we enter into 2011, one of our challenges is to keep the Lord’s commandments. The Lord Jesus had taught His disciples many truths and commandments (Matthew 5-7). One important command was for them to love one another as the Lord Jesus had loved them (John 15:12). Seeking to keep all of the Lord’s commands will be most challenging. What are some compelling reasons for us to do so?

1. Because It Shows Our True Love For The Lord Jesus

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
John 14:15

If we obey the Lord and keep His commandments, it shows that we truly love Him. Our love for the Lord is expressed in deeds and not just in words alone.

2. Because It Causes Us To Abide In The Lord’s Kind Of Love

“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.”
John 15:10

When we keep His commandments, we are reflecting and practising His kind of love. As the Lord Jesus had loved the Father and kept His commands, we are doing the same with reference to our Saviour’s commands. The use of the “if” denotes that the responsibility of keeping His commands is on those who hear them.

Ramifications Of Keeping The Lord’s Commands

What are the ramifications of keeping the Lord’s commandments?

1. The Lord Would Reveal Himself To Us

“He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
John 14:21

When we hold fast to His commandments, both the Father and the Lord Jesus will specially love us. The Lord Jesus will reveal Himself to us in a special way.

2. The Lord’s Joy Would Remain With Us

“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.”
John 15:11

The Lord Jesus taught these lessons so that the joy that He had given them would remain in His disciples. Not only that, their joy in the Lord will also be full. There would come a special sense of joy when His people follow His commandments. Let’s keep His command that we may experience this fullness of joy.
