Cultivating A Steadfast Heart Like David

Where will we be in ten years’ time? God willing, we would still be here in Bethany listening to God’s word, serving Him and praising His name. It would truly be wonderful if all of us would remain faithful to God. I was personally challenged by what Pastor Charles wrote in his daily devotions from the text of Psalm 108. This psalm was a song written by David that speaks of his spirit of praise to God. He was able to have such a spirit because he had a steadfast heart.

“O God, my heart is steadfast”
Psalm 108:1

In a world where there is much anxiety, challenges and distractions, the heart can be easily swayed and be turned away from God. David sought to have a heart that was steadfast in what he did before God. He determined that he would be loyal to Him and remain faithful to Him. He determined to love the Lord with all his heart and he would not turn to other gods. Even at times when he sinned against the Lord and strayed, he responded by returning to Him to seek restoration. Young people, let’s also seek to have a steadfast heart before the Lord.

Depth Of Appreciation Of The Attributes Of God

“For Your mercy is great above the heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the clouds.”

Psalm 108:4

David had a steadfast heart because he had experienced how the Lord was most merciful to him. He saw how the Lord’s mercy was so great that it reached to the heavens. There is a limitless store of mercy that God can give to His people. It is so great that it cannot be measured. David must have appreciated in a deep way how God was most merciful to him. He sinned gravely against Him by killing Uriah (2 Samuel 11-12) and numbering his army (2 Samuel 24). And yet at both times, when he repented of his sins, the Lord was merciful to him. The Lord’s truth was another attribute that he appreciated much. God’s truth is so great that it reaches to the clouds. It would always stand.

Praising The Lord With Our Glory

“I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.
Awake, lute and harp!

I will awake the dawn.”

Psalm 108:1-2

As a response, David sought to praise the Lord with his glory. Of course, God was the one who was his glory (Psalm 3:3). He was the One who shielded David and protected him. Furthermore, it was God who created man with glory (Psalm 8:5). When we give praise to God with all that God has done for us, we are praising Him with our glory. David determined within himself to give praise to the Lord at the dawning of the day. He could not help but begin the day with praising the Lord. May we also seek to give praise to God as we reflect on how God has been a real help to us.

Determine To Praise The Lord Among The Nations

“I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples,
And I will sing praise to You among the nations.”

Psalm 108:3

David determined that he would give praise to the Lord among all the people. He wanted the nation of Israel to sing praise to Him that all the nations would hear. This Saturday, we are having a Mid-Autumn festival special. Let’s invite our family members and friends for this special occasion. We will be giving honour and praise to the Lord for all that He has done for us. Let’s give praise to Him among all who will be coming. May they hear of the wonderful mercies and truths of the Lord!
