SEEKING THE LORD JESUS WITH THE RIGHT GOALS

One important aspect of evangelism is to help people seek the Lord Jesus with the right goals. The Son of God was helping those who were seeking Him to focus on meeting their spiritual needs rather than their physical needs (John 6:30-36). There were those who were looking for Him because of the bread and fish that they had eaten. They were questioning the Lord Jesus with regards to what kind of sign that He would do for them. The people spoke of how Moses provided 40 years of manna in the wilderness. They were wondering whether the Lord Jesus would do the same. He sought to help them focus not on physical bread but on Him as the spiritual bread of life.

COMING TO THE LORD JESUS AS THE BREAD OF LIFE

“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and He who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
John 6:35

The Lord Jesus declared Himself as the true bread that came down from heaven and He sought to bring people to faith in Him.

1. RECOGNISING THE LORD JESUS AS THE BREAD OF LIFE

A. NECESSITY IN LIFE

As bread was a necessity for life in Israel during the times of Jesus, even so the Lord Jesus as the bread of life is a necessity for daily life. He is most necessary for us in life.

B. NO ONE / NOTHING LIKE THE TRUE BREAD FROM HEAVEN

No one and nothing on earth is like the Lord Jesus, the true bread from heaven. The manna from heaven pales in insignificance compared to who the Lord Jesus is. He is far greater than anyone and anything on earth because He is the true and living bread, who meets all the spiritual needs of men.

C. NEVER-ENDING SOURCE OF LIFE

The Lord Jesus is a never-ending source of life. Manna helped sustained physical life for 40 years. Our Saviour gives life for eternity. He offers eternal life to the whole world, not just for a nation.

2. RELATING TO THE LORD JESUS AS THE BREAD OF LIFE

A. COMING TO HIM FOR SALVATION

The challenge was for the people to come to the Lord Jesus for salvation from their sins. God the Father is the One who would choose and give those who would come to the Lord Jesus (John 6:37). Those coming to our Saviour will not be cast out by Him (John 6:37). They will belong to Him forever. Those who listen and learn from God through the teaching of His word will indeed come to the Lord Jesus (John 6:45). When we come to Him in faith, we will never spiritually hunger again.

B. HAVING REALITY OF FAITH IN THE PERSON OF THE LORD JESUS

Faith is about believing in the Lord Jesus and relating to Him as a real person. True belief is neither a theoretical nor a momentary thing. Genuine faith is having a real and personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. When we believe in Him, we will never spiritually thirst again. Let’s seek to have this reality of faith in the person of the Lord Jesus. Let’s believe in Him with all our heart and soul.
