Learning From The Example Of The Wise Men

Each Christmas should see us deepening the way we worship the Lord. For many of us who were at the recent Youth Conference, our spirit of worship has been greatly enhanced by the special Youth Conference Christmas programme we had on the last night. Pastor was speaking on the true spirit of worship from the text of Matthew 2. The wise men who came from the east were led by a star. What were the features of their spirit of worship?

1. Focusing On Our Lord Jesus As King

“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?”
Matthew 2:2

The wise men had a burning question in their heart as they commenced on their journey to Israel. They wanted to find the baby Jesus whom they perceived as the King of the Jews. Their worship was centred on the Lord Jesus Christ as King. Is our worship also focused on the Lord Jesus?

2. Inspiration To Worship The Lord

“For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”
Matthew 2:2

God had revealed to them that the new star that they saw in the east was no ordinary one. This star was associated with the birth of the Lord Jesus, the Son of God. They were deeply inspired and motivated to search this baby out and to worship Him. We too need inspiration to worship the Lord.

Spirit Of Worship Honored By The Lord

“We have seen His star in the east”
Matthew 2:2

It must have been an extraordinary sight for the wise men to behold the star in the sky. This was a special blessing from the Lord to honor them. Because of their faith and zeal to worship the Christ, the Lord God blessed them with guidance from a moving star. They were also specially warned and guided not to return to Herod. God blesses when we have a right spirit in worship.

Having Appropriate Expressions

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshipped Him. And … presented gifts to Him”
Matthew 2:10-11

What were the expressions of their spirit of worship? There was a great sense of joy. They were able to see the star again after departing from Jerusalem. When they saw the star and were led to Jesus, they worshipped Him with great humility by bowing before Him. They offered special and precious offerings before Him as their expression of honour for the Lord Jesus. This Christmas, let’s also seek to express our spirit of worship in definite ways to Him. Let’s seek to honour our Lord with joy and awe.
