GIVING HEED TO GOD’S WORD

When We Do Not Give Heed To God’s Word

A boat at sea without an anchor will naturally drift away. Without being secured to a jetty or being anchored to the sea’s floor, the boat will slowly be carried away by the sea’s undercurrent. This idea of drifting away can also be applied to the Christian faith. When we do not take heed to God’s word, we can easily drift away.

“Lest we drift away.”
Hebrews 2:1

“If we neglect so great a salvation”
Hebrews 2:3

We can waft away from the Lord and from having a steadfast faith in Him. What is the main cause of people drifting away? It is the persistent and personal problem of neglect. There are some who possess a poor regard of their salvation in Christ. From this poor regard, there will come a neglecting of their walk with the Lord. They become distracted by the things of the world and it will slowly cause them to drift away. If it is left unchecked, Christians could end up bringing punitive judgment upon themselves. Their lives could be ship-wrecked (1 Timothy 1:19).

The Challenge To Take Heed To God’s Word

The challenge for us is to have a high regard for the lessons we learn from God’s word.

1. Heeding The Warning With Reference To God’s Word

“For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?”
Hebrews 2:2-4

If the word of angels brought about punitive judgments because people did not heed it, so much more would the confirmed word spoken by the Lord. Of greater standing is the spoken word of the Lord Jesus. There would be the greater commitment from God to mete out punitive judgment. Let’s heed this warning.

2. Giving More Earnest Heed To God’s Word

“Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard”
Hebrews 2:1

Let’s be challenged to give more attention to the hearing of the word of God. When the Lord Jesus looms large in our life, we will give more earnest heed to what God’s word says. We must pay close attention to what we hear in Church. It is most necessary for us to put greater effort into hearing and practising the word of God. Let’s do whatever it takes to ensure that we do not take God’s precious word for granted. Let’s truly seek to give more sincere and diligent heed to it.
