Stillness Is Not Easy To Find

It is hard to find stillness in life. In this world of constant change and unpredictable events, it is not uncommon for the soul to be in disarray at times. Fear and worry about the future may be the main causes of this predicament. The Psalmists in the text of Psalm 46 were concerned about worst case scenarios like natural disasters and war situations that may come. They knew that the possibility of these things was very real. They reasoned within themselves that despite all these things occurring, they would still not fear. They were going to exercise faith in God. Young people, we too may have fears concerning the worst case scenarios. Let’s learn to find stillness in the Lord instead of fearing.

Learning To Find Stillness In The Lord

1. Focusing On The Lord God And His Attributes

“God is our refuge and strength”
Psalm 46:1

“The God of Jacob is our refuge.”
Psalm 46:7, 11

The Psalmists began their psalm by focusing on the Lord as their refuge and strength. The Lord is a personal refuge for us as He was to Jacob (Genesis 28-50). He would be there for us and grant us the strength we need to go through any challenges.

2. Sensing The Presence Of The Lord

“God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved”
Psalm 46:5

“The Lord of hosts is with us”
Psalm 46:7, 11

Stillness also comes when we can sense the presence of God in our life. The Psalmists declared that as long as God was in the midst of Jerusalem, the city of God, she would not be moved. There was no need to fear because the Lord of the heavenly host was with them. Let’s also learn to exercise our faith in the presence of God in our life, to know that we are not alone.

3. Certainty In God’s Help

“A very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1

“God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.”
Psalm 46:5

The Psalmists also had certainty in the Lord’s help. The phrase “very present” means “abundantly available”. God would constantly avail Himself to help us. His help will come at the time when we need it the most. Let’s learn to be certain that God would help us when we seek it diligently.

4. Practising Stillness In The Sovereignty Of God

“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”

Psalm 46:10

The Lord’s word to the Psalmists was to be still before Him. He is a God who is sovereign over all the nations of the earth. Knowing that God is a great and sovereign God helps us to find peace that He is in control of all things. Let’s learn to be still and let’s trust the Lord for the future.
