The Apostasy In The Last Days

The love for the truth of God’s word today is fast fading. In these “last days”, many will not have a deep appreciation and love for the truth of the Scriptures. Instead they will stray from it and be deceived by false teachings. Great apostasy will plague Churches. Paul warned Timothy of how such perilous times would come.

“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come”
2 Timothy 3:1

During such times, men will be lovers of themselves. They will engage in sins according to their own fancy. They will have a form of godliness but they will deny the power of the Lord Jesus. People will keep on learning but never come to the knowledge of the truth. False teachers will grow worse and worse. It is the midst of such perilous times that we must remain steadfast in the truth.

The Challenge To Continue In The Truths Of God’s Word

“But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them”
2 Timothy 3:14

“The things” are a reference to the corpus of knowledge that we have learned from God’s word. There is a set of truths that all of us must know and understand. It is known as a body of truth. They are teachings that we have learned from godly teachers and we are fully convinced of their reliability. Timothy was able to see the consistency of such truths in the lifestyle of his teachers. We must continue in this body of truth that we have been taught. The word “continue” means to remain steadfast and firm in the knowledge of God’s word. We must not move away from this body of truth. “Continue” does not mean that we turn to the Scriptures only once in a while. It means that we will constantly abide in the word of God even though others do not. We will stand on the Scriptures against the tide of apostasy.

The Results Of Continuing In The Truths Of God’s Word

“That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:17

This body of truth from the Holy Scriptures can bring about significant changes in our life. When we remain in it and seek to increase our understanding of the word, we will be taking definite steps to becoming “a man of God”. We will move from spiritual immaturity to spiritual maturity. There will come the proper and full equipping of our lives for ministry. The word of God will help us form doctrines, correct us and instruct us in the right way to go. We will be equipped in knowing how to do every good work. When we have such deep knowledge, the Lord will use us for His work. Young people, let’s be challenged to see how the word of God can work in our life. Let’s submit to the truths of the Bible and to endeavour to remain in them till the Lord moulds us to be useful servants of His.
