“Consider What I Say”

TAKING TIME TO THINK THROUGH LESSONS TAUGHT

The principles and lessons learnt from the word of God must be thought through thoroughly. The apostle Paul had challenged Timothy concerning what it means to be strong in the grace of God and to commit the things that he had learnt from his mentor to faithful men (2 Timothy 2:2). It does not follow that whatever Paul had taught would be fully understood by Timothy. This was where thinking through lessons would help him comprehend truths further.

“Consider what I say …”
2 Timothy 2:7

1. “WHAT I SAY”

Many deep lessons had been communicated to Timothy by Paul. He must review what had been taught to him from the Scriptures. The things that he had heard among many witnesses were to have a continuing effect on him. He was to give that special regard to all that Paul was “saying” to him.

2. “CONSIDER”

The Greek word for “consider” is the word “Noeo”. It means to use the mind to think carefully what had been said. This was a command from Paul that needed to be taken seriously. Timothy must do his part in pondering through carefully the truths of God’s word.

a. For clarity of thoughts.

b. For connecting of thoughts.

c. For concretizing of truths.

d. For communicating of truths to others.

Our challenge too is to always take time to reflect further concerning the lessons taught that we may go deeper in understanding.

THE LORD WILL GIVE US FURTHER UNDERSTANDING

“… And may the Lord give you understanding in all things.”
2 Timothy 2:7

We have to do our part in pondering over the word of God before He would give us further understanding. The things of God are truly deep (1 Corinthians 2:10). He will give us understanding through His Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:12).

1. PIECING THINGS TOGETHER

When we take time to compare Scripture with Scripture, the Spirit of God would bring about that understanding (1 Corinthians 2:13). He will enable us to piece things together and give us that comprehension and enlightenment.

2. HUMBLY RELYING ON THE LORD FOR UNDERSTANDING OF ALL THINGS

Paul was confident that it was the Lord who would give Timothy further wisdom and perception concerning all things. 2 Timothy was going to be his last epistle to Timothy. We do not know whether he did get to see Paul in the end (2 Timothy 4:11). Timothy’s part was to humbly rely on the Lord to give him comprehension. He would grant him understanding in all things. Even when Paul was no longer around, the Lord would still give that spiritual perception that was needed. Let’s also learn to humbly seek the Lord for further understanding concerning the truth that has been taught to us and may we receive enlightenment in all things.
