Coming to the Lord Jesus

NOT ALL WILL COME TO THE LORD JESUS

The Lord Jesus will do all He can to help people to seek Him as the bread of life. Our Saviour was teaching the multitude to go beyond seeing things from a physical plane to a spiritual one (John 6:27). However, there were those who chose not to do so. They rejected the invitation of the Lord Jesus to come to Him and to believe in Him. They did this because they had wrong ideas about Him being only a mere man. They were not hearing and learning from the word as the Lord Jesus taught them. As such, they were not able to understand and recognize Him as the giver of eternal life. Furthermore, they even complained against Him.

ASPECTS OF COMING TO THE LORD JESUS

While there were those who rejected the Lord Jesus, there were also those who did come to Him.

1. THE PERSONAL BENEFITS OF COMING TO THE LORD JESUS

Those who would come to the Lord Jesus and believe in Him will find spiritual satisfaction. There will be that spiritual assurance of salvation (John 6:37, 39). The Lord Jesus Himself will receive all who would come to Him and He will not cast them out. He will raise them up in the day of judgement.

2. THE WORK OF GOD IN BRINGING PEOPLE TO THE LORD JESUS

A. THE LORD GOD DRAWING THE ONE WHO COMES TO THE LORD JESUS

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
John 6:44

It is the Father who chooses and calls people to the Lord Jesus. No one is able to come to Him unless the Lord God Himself gently draws him. The Lord God will not drag anyone to heaven. He will graciously speak to hearts and draw them to His beloved Son. The Lord Jesus’ assurance is that He will personally raise them up to everlasting life.

B. THE LORD GOD TEACHING THE ONE WHO COMES TO THE LORD JESUS

“It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.”
John 6:45

Part of the work of God in bringing people to the Lord Jesus is that they will be taught by Him. It is the Scriptures that testify who the Lord Jesus is (John 5:39). Those who humbly hear the word and learn from Him will come to see Him as the true bread of life. They would be drawn to Him. They will recognize the Lord Jesus as the giver of eternal life. The invisible part behind this is that God Himself would come alongside them to teach and speak to their hearts. He would teach them how sinful they are, convict them of their sins and show them how much they need the Lord Jesus.

PERSONAL APPLICATION

1. FOR SEEKERS

The challenge for us is to listen to the word and learn from the Lord that we may come to Him as the bread of life and find assurance of our salvation.

2. FOR BELIEVERS

The challenge for us is to appreciate even more the role of God the Father in bringing us to the Lord Jesus. Let’s, with a heart of gratitude, continue to learn from the Lord and His word.
