Pressing Towards Spiritual Maturity

Many Christians today are spiritual babies. They are still drinking spiritual “milk” rather than eating spiritual “meat”. They are unable to handle deep spiritual things because they are in a state of spiritual immaturity. Young people, we must not be contented with remaining in such a state. The Lord wants us to move towards being a strong and mature Christian.

“Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go to perfection”
Hebrews 6:1

The writer of Hebrews was exhorting his readers to press towards spiritual maturity. The word “perfection” means maturity. Sometimes, we can be caught up with just discussing the basic things of Christ and we do not move to higher levels of our faith. The challenge for us is to make headway towards spiritual maturity.

Having A Deeper Appreciation Of Jesus Christ

The first thing that the writer of Hebrews sought to do was to help Christians understand the Lord Jesus better. He painted a wonderful and awesome portrait of the Lord Jesus.

1. The Person Of Christ

a. He is the Son of God (Hebrews 1:2).

b. He is the express image of God (Hebrews 1:3).

c. He is greater than the angels (Hebrews 1:4).

d. He is seated at the right hand of God (Hebrews 1:3).

e. He is the everlasting King (Hebrews 1:8).

2. The Works Of Christ

a. He spoke the words of God in these last days (Hebrews 1:2).

b. He is the creator of the all the worlds (Hebrews 1:2).

c. He upholds all things in the universe (Hebrews 1:3).

d. He purged us of our sins (Hebrews 1:3).

e. He is the author of our Salvation (Hebrews 5:9).

Having A Greater Sense Of Awe At Christ

When we see the Lord Jesus for who He is, we cannot help but stand in awe of Him. The full worth of the Lord must be understood. We must appreciate Him in a deeper way. Our hearts should respond with a greater sense of awe for Christ. It takes maturity to have such a heart. Let’s have a mature understanding and appreciation of our Lord.
