BLESSING GOD FOR HIS RICH SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS

Salvation is a wonderful gift from the Lord God. It is indeed profound and tremendously rich in truth. The apostle Paul, as he wrote the epistle of Ephesians, took time to explain carefully these amazing spiritual blessings that came with the gift of salvation. He expounded on the works of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Spirit of God with reference to salvation and how it would culminate with the concept of the Church (Ephesians 1:23). During Paul’s time, there were false doctrines being taught at the Church at Ephesus that needed to be dealt with (1 Timothy 1:3). These blessings were meant to be understood clearly so that they may be deeply appreciated and that the Ephesians would give praise to the glory of His grace.

1. PROFOUND APPRECIATION OF THE LORD’S GLORIOUS SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS

“Who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ”
Ephesians 1:3

A. THE SOURCE OF ALL BLESSINGS – OUR HEAVENLY FATHER

The focus is on the One who has blessed us spiritually. He is our God and our heavenly Father. These spiritual blessings come from a loving Father who has planned the best for the Church. Many wonderful and amazing spiritual blessings have been given as part of our gift of salvation. Every blessing is special and precious. It is up to us to discover and appreciate them deeply.

B. THE NATURE OF THESE SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS – INVISIBLE YET REAL, RELEVANT, AND ETERNAL

These blessings were given in the spiritual realm. They cannot be seen and yet they are facts and deeply significant for our lives. We need eyes of faith to see these spiritual blessings. Furthermore, these spiritual blessings are different from physical blessings because they are eternal in nature.

C. THE PERSON IN WHOM WE CAN FIND THESE BLESSINGS – THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

These spiritual blessings are found in the person of Christ and what He has done for us. They are part of the salvation that He has brought about for us. We need to grow in knowledge and faith to appropriate these blessings.

2. PERSONAL JOYOUS BLESSING OF THE LORD GOD

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”
Ephesians 1:3

“Blessed” means to honour with well-crafted words. “To bless” was a very Hebrew way of praising the Lord. This was something that the Old Testament Psalmist did (Psalm 103:1). Paul expressed his blessing with a high regard for God as Father. He brought in the idea of a close relationship between God and the Lord Jesus. God was a perfect Father to His Son when He was on this earth. He is also a perfect Father to all of us and this should motivate us to highly honour Him. We can bless the Lord God with much joy and heartfelt gratitude because of His great grace in blessing us.
