The Devil As A Roaring And Devouring Lion

Satan is on a vicious campaign against the sons of the living God. He will show no mercy when it comes to hindering their work within the Church. Peter described Satan as a great adversary and a roaring lion.

“Because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
1 Peter 5:8

A roaring lion is one who is vicious and angry. It will stop at nothing to satisfy its needs. The devil will also do the same when it comes to inflicting suffering on God’s people. If he is given half the chance, he will cause church leaders to rise up against each other. The word “devil” means slanderer. He is known as the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10). He will cause strife and conflict between leaders and members. We must not be afraid of what the evil one can do to us.

The Challenge To Be Vigilant Against The Evil One

How can we be vigilant against the wiles of the devil?

1. Be Sober

“Be sober”
1 Peter 5:8

The word “sober” in the Greek means to exercise great self control. We are to learn to practise self control in our lives. We must never allow ourselves to be caught up with our own spirit. We can end up saying hurtful words and doing that which is wrong. We must learn to be sober.

2. Be On Guard

“Be vigilant”
1 Peter 5:8

The word “vigilant” in the Greek means to be watchful. The Christian soldier must also constantly be on the alert against the wiles of the devil. It is so important that we learn to be prayerful and watchful in all that we do.

3. Put Up A Strong Resistance

“Resist him”
1 Peter 5:9

Furthermore, we are to resist the temptations of the devil. We are to stand against the evil one and not give in to his attacks. It does not mean that we foolishly rise up against the devil and ridicule him. We must humble ourselves before the Lord and depend on His grace to stand against him.

4. Be Steadfast In The Faith

“… steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.”
1 Peter 5:9

Our part is to remain steadfast in the faith. We are comforted in knowing that we are not alone in suffering for the Lord. There are others who are suffering too and yet they continue to be steadfast. Young people, let’s build a strong defence against the wiles of the devil. Let’s always stand on the word of God and depend on His grace. Let’s always be on our guard against the evil one.
